Another rough night for Martin Brodeur leads me to believe it could be official. Most declared him dead after last season but I was still holding out hope. Unfortunately Hope turned out to be a 300lb alcoholic. Just look at the stats: 5-5/.899/2.81/0SO. That is horrawful. Another red flag is the fact that Johan Hedberg has been by far the superior netminder: 7-4/.920/2.24/1SO. So what does this all mean? It means if you need a Goalie pick up Moose Hedberg. It also means Brodeur is not only NOT a #1, he’s not even a #2 Goalie right now. If you can trade the name and fill another need, DO IT! It’s BrodOVER.Please, blog, may I have some more?
On November 15th Roberto Luongo had one of those phantom UBI’s pop up and the next night Cory Schneider got lit up by the Blackhawks. It was a bad start to say the least, but since then he’s given up 4 Goals in 5 games (incl 2 Shutouts). Last night he saved 47 of 48. It automatically raises the question: Can the Canucks get value by trading Luongo? I say no. But that’s for a different site to discuss. We are about the glorious fake game of fantasy hockey. Meaning the real question is what becomes of Luongo? Schneider can’t Win every game so I’d guess after his next loss Luongo is back in there. But the unmistakable truth is that even if Luongo comes back and is effective, it’s going to be a 60/40 split going forward. If you can do with fewer starts then by all means keep him. Please, blog, may I have some more?
It’s been quite a week for injuries and Coach firings. It’s funny how firings seem to be contagious in all the sports. First it was Davis Payne of the St. Louis Blues being replaced by Ken Hitchcock. After that went well (and lit a fire under the now streaking Blues) suddenly GM’s around the league felt emboldened to do the same. Because surely they have supplied all the talent needed to win a Cup, and the Coach is simply not getting the most out of that talent… Yeah… That’s usually not the case. Usually it’s a delusional GM desperately trying to save his own a$$ and as the old saying goes, you can’t fire the players. That’s what’s going on in Carolina. Simply not enough talent there to expect more than a 9th or 10th place finish in the conference. Fantasy wise I guess it could help Staal, but I was betting on him turning it around no matter who the Coach was (how can it get any worse??). The real fantasy relevant firing is Big Boy Boudreau in Washington. The only guy on that team who didn’t hate him was Tomas Vokoun, and that’s because he’s only been around him a few months. This should allow the struggling stars (specifically Ovie & Semin) to take a deep breath and relax. And not to paint them all with the same brush, but Russian hockey players are inherently lazy. If they aren’t motivated by their Coach and/or don’t like him they aren’t going to give 100% effort. I’m predicting a strong finish to the season for both Semin and Ovechkin….Please, blog, may I have some more?
Let’s face facts: In his first full week back, after missing an entire year, Sidney Crosby was the best player in the league. His line for the week: 2G/6A/+7/8PIM/2PPP/15SOG. That’s called game changer. If you own him, your team BC (before Crosby) was an entire notch below where your team is now. Borderline playoff teams that own him are now in the playoffs. A good team now becomes the favorite to win it all. I know that for my OG league I need him to pull off a miracle and somehow get my team to the playoffs. “What a miracle that would be indeed!” Shutup VTB, it’s just a slow start… For real though, and I mean fo real real, as an owner it’s tough to watch him. Every time he gets breathed on my bunghole puckers up. Stay healthy Sid and avoid contact at all times! Now onto some mere mortals:
Pascal Dupuis – LW (Pit): Speaking of good weeks, dirty rascal Pascal had 2G, 3A and 14 Shots. “He is finally blossoming!” Damn VTB, twice already? Anyway he is not blossoming but what he is doing is getting time on the Crosby line. And just like your team is that much better with Crosby, so are any players playing on the same line as him. Please, blog, may I have some more?
It’s the Red Wings and the Bruins on NBC! This means that even the 90 year old couple who has one of the first color televisions ever built can watch a hockey game. Sure they may have to adjust their rabbit ears to get a good picture, but they can watch hockey nonetheless. For those of us who love hockey and/or just have a vested interest in this game because we own some of the players – it’s a great thing to have hockey center stage on a network everybody has. Cox Cable or Dish may not carry Versus, but you can damn well bet they have NBC… About the game itself, the Bruins come into it on fire having won 10 straight games while the Wings have won 3 in a row themselves. But of course this is all about fantasy hockey, so who gives a flying F about what the teams are doing?? There are plenty of fantasy studs to get excited about in this game.. Seguin, Chara, Thomas, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Lucic, Howard. Plus close to stud guys like Marchand, Bergeron, Franzen & Kronwall. Should be an awesome game and I hope ya’ll will be watching it with me and commenting/asking questions at the same time. I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the game as well, so keep hitting that REFRESH button to see my latest musings… And finally, as my boy Mills Lane would say: Let’s get it on!!!Please, blog, may I have some more?
Another light night in the NHL and another win by the Leaf’s, meaning 24 straight hours of “can the Leaf’s make the playoffs?” Just ask me dummies (ahem…Dreger….ahem). “The Toronto Maple Leafs are back and better than ever! In order to be reborn, you must die completely!” Hey, how did you get into this conversation Vic the Brick? Had to find a team to latch onto since the Lakers season is canceled? Oh wait I get it – the Leafs are unbearable to anyone outside of Toronto just like the Lakers are unbearable to anyone outside of LA (only the Lakers actually Win)… But enough! Onto the man with whom this post is titled. I mention Ales Hemsky because he’s surpassed the 8 game threshold for games played since returning from injury. It’s an arbitrary number I just came up with, but it sounds legit. Actually the truth is no one knows when his next injury will be, but until then he can give you RW2 stats. And with only 27% ownership in Yahoo he’s well worth a flier…
Tyler Bozak – C (Tor): It’s alot easier for me to write about the peripheral players on the Leafs than the key cogs. And that means guys like Bozak who can be picked up for nothing and give you numbers on a light schedule day like today. Obviously 2G/1A/5SOG won’t happen all the time. But if you time it right and get him when he’s got 4 games in 6 days or something he could steal a win in a H2H weekly league. Please, blog, may I have some more?
It’s official, Sidney Crosby is back. The headlines are infinite: NHL.com – Sid-sational Debut! TSN.Com – Mid-Season Form! Yahoo – Welcome Back, Kid! (Not much effort there Yahoo). NBC Sports – Super Mario? No, Super Sidney! FOX Sports – Crosby Thrills (btw, check out their site. Please, blog, may I have some more?
I remember looking at the Blue Jacket depth chart Tuesday to see who was going to start in place of ECHL Goalie Steve Mason. Turns out it was career journeyman/terrible goalie/anarchist Curtis Sanford. Here’s the blurb from the game recap: “Sanford gave Columbus arguably its best goaltending performance of the season by making 26 saves in a 2-1 shootout loss to the streaking Bruins.” Yeah when I say Steve Mason sucks, I’m doing a disservice to the word suck. Don’t go crazy and add Sanford though because here’s what else the game recap said: “Curtis Sanford went two years, 10 months and seven days between starts in the NHL.” Yeah, not good…
Tuuka Rask – G (Bos): Poor Tuuka must have had flashbacks of last season when he went 11-14 despite solid ratios. Just 1 Goal allowed on 31 Shots vs Colombus yet he still had to Win in a shootout. Brutal..Please, blog, may I have some more?
Chris Stewart was suspended 3 games by someone who looks like he should be in a Geico commercial. I feel like at the end of every one of Brendan Shanahan’s explanations he needs to say “That was so easy a cave-man could do it!”… Okay okay, he’s not a neanderthal, but can he at least lighten up a bit? His demeanor is that of a policeman telling some woman her husband was murdered. You’re announcing an NHL suspension. Please, blog, may I have some more?
I’ve been an outspoken critic of James Neal this season but he continues to spit in my face with games like last night. A Goal and a pair of Assists gives Neal 20 Points in 18 games. Who needs Sidney Crosby? It’s clearly time to throw out his first 4 years in the NHL when he averaged 46 Points a season. I would be shocked if he kept this up and finished with 85 points, but 75 is not out of the question. And with where he was drafted industry ’perts call that hitting a home-run…
Kris Letang – D (Pit): The Power Play minutes are insane and after a Goal and an Assist last night he is right back on a point-per-game pace (16 in 16). Throw in 9 Power Play Points and over 3 Shots per game (45 total) and Kris Letang is showing why he’s (probably) the best fantasy Defenseman in the league. Please, blog, may I have some more?
