So are we gonna beat Valley next week? They’re gonna eat mat sir! Oh yeah it’s all about the Bayside Tigers and the un-pinnable A.C. Slater. Quick, bonus points for anyone who knows what the AC in AC Slater stands for…………… Anyone?…………. No no it’s not Awful Character…..Please, blog, may I have some more?
Rather than comment on the All Star game and the absurdity of 21 Goals in 60 minutes (9 in the 3rd Period alone), I wanna look at some buy low guys heading into the 2nd “half” of the season. All you need to know about buying low is that it’s anything but a science. Often guys having bad seasons this late in the year are just gonna keep being terrible. Season long slumps are not a figment of buy-low advocates imagination and I’m sure there will be a guy (or 2) in this post who will prove that. “Nice Disclaimer DC! Sitting on the fence is an art I perfected many years ago.” Hey quiet VTB, the readers aren’t supposed to know that… Okay onto the meat of the potato – our first buy-low candidate: Lubomir Visnovsky. Please, blog, may I have some more?
For those of you watched the All Star “fantasy” draft I commend you. Nothing like 40 incredibly awkward handshake-hugs between a bunch of guys who try and kill each other every night. Not to mention (what I’d guess) are a series of really bad jokes and forced “banter” between the players. Then to top it all off a guy gets completely embarrased by his peers, but it’s okay! We’ll give him a brand new car for free! The whole thing comes off as something dreamed up by a TV executive. In fact if this draft was happening in my backyard, I’d close the blinds…. Now onto the important stuff: Logan Couture. I gotta be honest my love for Wolverine has declined slightly this season, but I can’t really explain why. His stat line is deliciously filling: 21G/15A/+9/10PPP/143SOG and his dual eligibility is a nice bonus too… Yeah, I’m ready to fall in love all over again…
Jiri Hudler – LW/RW (Det): It was another good day for the Hud on Wednesday. 2 Goals gives him 15 on the season and puts him on pace for a career high. HOWEVA, something is out of place when you look deeper into the numbers. Those 15 Goals are on just 69 Shots, giving him an incredible 21.7 Shooting %. That’s higher than Steven Stamkos, Phil Kessel, and Evgeni Malkin. In other words, don’t go put any bets on Hudler keeping up this pace. Please, blog, may I have some more?
I decided to go with the Hat Trick and talk about Mathieu Perreault. I gotta be honest I’ve been racking my brain trying to think of something good to say, but it’s an impossibility. “But the Great 8 is out and Perreault is stepping up to meet the challenge!” Calm down VTB, Ovechkin is only out 3 games and besides, Perreault is a Center, Ovechkin plays the wing. Mathieu Perreault has had a good week (4G/2A last 3 games) but the cold, hard, siberian truth is that his C only eligibility makes him irrelevant in all but the deepest of leagues. Or in other words, just like voting for Ross Perot was a complete waste of your time, so is picking up Mathieu Perreault. Please, blog, may I have some more?
Alex Ovechkin was suspended 3 games for “launching” himself into Z Michalek (lets just call him Z to make things easier). 3 Games is kind of alot, and could be just enough to prevent him from getting to 30 Goals this year. And if that happens, the hockey media will have one of the greatest hyperbole-gasms of all time. Even the more level headed analysts like…..Please, blog, may I have some more?
RCL 1 had the top 2 teams for the week. Jolly Razzers were number 1, with 21 of a possible 22 points, while True North Puck Co. notched 19. Here are the leaders in each category for the week, with the average in brackets:
Kris Letang had what I would call a triumphant return from concussion. After missing 21 games, Letang played over 24 minutes with an Assist and a +2. And don’t forget, Pooty-Tang was a Top 10 fantasy Defenseman last year and was well on his way to doing the same this season. Then he took a shot to the head. The bad news is concussion comrade Crosby looked great in his first game back this year and we all know how that turned out. I really do despise you, “C” word. You make my job much more difficult than it has to be. In fact let me say this (in case someone asks) the odds of Letang getting another concussion are 50/50…
Jaroslav Halak – G (Stl): Another Shutout as Halak continues to dominate. After 20 Goals allowed in his first 6 games of the season, Halak has allowed 20 in 13 games since November 29. And even more impressively, Halak is 10-0-3 in his last 13 starts. Even MORE impressively, he’s 6-0-0 with a .971SV%, 1.00GAA and 3 Shutouts in the month of January. Please, blog, may I have some more?
Peter Mueller finally did something since returning that’s worth talking about, and I’m not just talking about the 2 Goals. He overcame a Concussion! No not that. He also had an Assist last night! No no that’s wrong too. Oh yeah, he finally saw more than 15 minutes on the ice. In fact he was out there for almost 20, including major Power Play time. It’s a good sign, and if it wasn’t for his Crosby-like concussion past I’d be screaming MUUUEEELLLEEEEERRRR from a mountain top. Unfortunately I’ve already been burned advocating for concussion victims, so I will temper expectations… But seriously those of you with garbage teams go pick him up now, his upside is high and if he gets concussed again you can just drop him. Please, blog, may I have some more?
Much like the “green industry” in America, Mike Green burst onto the scene a few years ago with promises of greatness. He was the future - A Defenseman who could not only give you a dominant +/- , but also well over 200 Shots and more than a Point-per-Game. That was unheard of and it would change the way the game was played. Or not….Please, blog, may I have some more?
Several teams made big jumps in the standings this week, with the Toronto Make Beliefs (RCL 1) leading the way, scoring a perfect 22 points. True North Puck Co. (RCL 1) and Laraque Bottom (The CHeap Seats) each picked up 21 points, while Razzmatazz (RCL 1), Shiska (Bobby Hull Division), and Detroit Rust Rats (Bobby Hull Division) all scored 20.Please, blog, may I have some more?
