Yes, this is still a hockey podcast despite the title!  Reid joins me once again to discuss the latest news as we are on the eve of the season.  Right as we are about to start the podcast, Sidney Crosby is diagnosed with a concussion so you get our analysis on the spot!  We also look at Jonathan Huberdeau‘s injury and some other players who recently went down.  We discuss all of the players holding out again (before Johnny Gaudreau and Nikita Kucherov signed), some rookies that made their respective teams, what players were waived and look at the impact of it all (yay Connor Hellebuyck).  Following last podcast, we look at our favorite over / under point totals for individual players and wrap it up with 10 minutes of random discussion.  From the debate on Sunday night, the aftermath (all hail Kenneth Bone!) and the recent success of the Bills, I promise you’ll get a laugh.  All of that and more in the final episode before the NHL season begins!

Viz, I’m a little worried about Cindy Crosby and his concussed head. Drafted out of the 6 hole last night in a 12 team league and pulled the trigger on him in the 2nd rd (19th overall). I couldnt pass him up there. Thoughts?

@BelmarPhil: I think that’s perfectly reasonable considering he was already skating this morning. Assuming no setbacks, it looks like a short term issue and getting him at 19 is plenty of value.

New to Fantasy Hockey this year was hoping you could give me some advice. 8 Team League scoring system is G=3, A=3, PPG=2, PPA=2 SOG=.4 and W=3, SV=.4, GA=-3. Lots of talent on the waiver wire so any advice would be appreciated!!!

@Man Of Steel: Looks pretty strong, well done. Your defense is pretty weak after Josi for an 8 team league but you’re loaded everywhere else. I’d make sure to stay on top of things on the waiver wire to upgrade the back end of your defense; the forwards and goalies need no work at all.

@Viz: great thanks! Looking forward to following you this year as I have only used this site for baseball in the past.

Defensemen on the wire are Green (Det), Hudler (DAL) and Lindholm (ANA) should I pick one of them up and drop one of my current [email protected]Viz:

@Man Of Steel: No problem, glad you’ve joined the hockey side of things! Well Hudler is actually a winger, he doesn’t have D eligibility, or at least he shouldn’t. I think I would add Green for Ekholm right now given your point system. Ekholm will not be getting power play time to start the season while Green will be running the first unit in Detroit. Lindholm is unsigned at the moment so leave him on the waiver wire.

Good morning Viz! Great podcast, great way to start off my day. I had my draft last night and the commissioner forgot to set our picks (I was supposed to pick 6th overall) and I got stuck with pick 12. This is for a 12-team non keeper league.

    Scoring categories: G, A, PPP, +/-, SOG, Blocks, Hits, W, L, GAA, SV%

What do you think of my team? Any weakness that I should address?

@Worlds First Analrapist: Looks really good, at first glance you seem really strong in points so that’s not a worry. You have some hits and blocks monsters to cancel out the guys who are virtual blanks there. I wouldn’t make a move for now, I’d just roll with who you drafted, well done.

best day 1 streamer in deep ass hits/blocks/STP/shots league.

    maroon/kassian/methot/bouma/chaisson/bergland/reaves/dillon/melker karlsson/neeto/t.lewis/tootoo

thinking the maroon give best upside of pts/hits/PIMs
only have these playing that day: pouliot/fabbri/couture/turris, lewis could get me some faceoffs, dillon/reaves hits or PIMs.

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: I think I’d go with Berglund, he will get power play time making him the best option for points plus the faceoffs. The hits are decent too, over one a game. If you want the big hits and PIM, Maroon is your guy and I’d completely understand it, depends what categories you are trying to get day one.

hey man great pod… gotta love that Bone! Buddy was just there though to ask “how will you protect my job as a card in guess who”. Also thanks for all your help with my team yesterday, I’m beginning to doubt the talent level of other owners in my league, however, Huber and Matt Murray were both dropped even though we have IR space…. gonna drop neuv and shove those guys on my IR and then use that roster spot to stream goalies until Murray is starting again.

My only question is it worth it to burn WW on either of those guys or just hope they pass? my WW prio is 7th

thanks viz and remember keep fit and have fun

@Shitwolf: Haha I saw the Guess Who thing on twitter and was dying laughing! I would definitely make the move for Hellebuyck, he’s going to slide right around 100th overall for me now that he’s got firm control of the job. I would give that first priority and use the waiver claim on him. If you can make secondary claims, then I’d go Murray second and then Huberdeau I wouldn’t bother with a waiver claim.

    my keeper options are
ok, i got 2 guys, andrew is getting my old team with these keepers, which he picked when i told him what the options were:
    Andrew (new) team: ehlers/dubnyk/allen/lucic/o’reilly/draisaitl/weber
C monahan, mackinnon, johansen (mckinnon can slot as a RW too)
    RW perry
    G price

for the last 2 options i have krug/martinez (great hits/blocks with points)/gudas (even more of those with PIMs but no points)/h.sedin/hanzal/kesler

Krug is an easy choice for me, I think he’s a top 100 player in standard and while the hits and blocks aren’t amazing, it’s good enough with his points contribution. The other one is much tougher. I’d lean towards Kesler because even though I really don’t like him in standard leagues this year, his value skyrockets when you get to add top notch faceoffs, strong hits and elite blocks for a forward.
