Not many teams have played on both Wednesday and Thursday this week but again, the Desert Dogs have garnered my attention.  In an impressive performance against on Wednesday against the Ducks and the Wild on Thursday, Anthony Duclair buried a hat trick on Wednesday and scored another on Thursday.  He’s an excellent prospect who was the main piece the Rangers sent to Arizona in the Keith Yandle trade so he’s well respected around the league.  You obviously can’t expect four goals in two games and the Coyotes are due to regress but in all dynasty leagues, I’d own Duclair and in 12 man leagues or deeper, I think he’s must own.

Here’s what else I’ve seen the last two nights:

Bobby Ryan – Goal, two assists, +1 and two shots.  I still have him lower than everyone else because I don’t believe but I still would own him in almost all leagues.  I just don’t see more than 60 points.

Mika Zibanejad – Goal and two assists with 3 shots.  No different than Ryan except that in normal drafts, you could have got him 5+ rounds later than Ryan.  Super talented but in fantasy, his value isn’t great because he’s not a shot-first player.

Erik Karlsson = 4 assists, +4 and 4 shots.  He’s good at the hockey game.

Sergei Bobrovsky – 20 saves on 26 shots.  Horrible again but I’m still holding.  He’s amazing and their defense shouldn’t be this bad.

Michal Neuvirth – Another shutout! I wouldn’t rush to add him but he’s a quality stream in the short term.

Zdeno Chara – Two assists with two shots and 2 PIM.  Still don’t like him this year compared to most but as long as he plays big minutes, he’s relevant.

Jimmy Hayes – Goal and three assists with 5 shots.  Only played 14 minutes so I’m not rushing to add him but he’s on my watch list.

Semyon Varlamov – 14 saves on 19 shots.  Another guy I’m holding on to because he has too much talent.  As long as his defense tightens up, he’s be a G1 or G2 for fantasy purposes.

Max Domi – Two goals and two assists in two games on Wednesday and Thursday.  Another must add at this point in all leagues.

Mike Smith – 37 save shutout on Wednesday, then 4 goals against on 17 shots on Thursday.  I don’t think he is either of these goalies but I think he is closer to the latter.  The Coyotes should be pretty bad and mainly because Smith will regress.  Sell high if you can.

Filip Forsberg – Goal, assist, 3 SOG and 2 PIM.  Still top 50 overall for me.

James Neal -Goal, assist and 5 shots.  Incredibly underrated in most fantasy circles, Neal posts big shot totals while contributing across the board.

John Tavares – Goal, assist, 2 SOG and 2 PIM.  Still good at hockey.  JOHNNY WHO!?

Thomas Greiss – 44 saves on 47 shots. Jaroslav Halak will be back very soon so I’m not adding Greiss except in the deepest leagues but keep him on the watch list.

Marc-Andre Fleury  – 22 save shutout.  Still like him for the wins, hate him for the rest of the goalie categories.

Evgeni Malkin – goal on three shots.  He’s pretty good at the hockey, expect him to take over games vern soon.

David Perron – Seven shots.  The goals and points are coming.

Braden Holtby – 26 saves on 27 shots.  Still should be a top 5 goalie come end of season.

John Carlson – Goal and assist on 3 shots.  Of all of my  preseason predictions, Carlson being a top 10+ defenseman is probably what I feel most confident in,

Evgeny Kuznetsov – Two assists and 2 shots.  The breakout is coming, believe it!

T.J Oshie – Goal and assist.  Again, the breakout is coming! Believe it!

Alex Ovechkin – Goal and 6 shots with 2 PIM. He’s pretty f’ing good!

Carey Price – 25 save shutout.  Gun to head, he’s the #1 goalie rest of season.

Tomas Fleischmann – goal and assist with 2 shots.  With his injury history, only ownable in the deepest of leagues.

Rick Nash – Four shots and 4 PIM.  The goals, they are coming.  Buy low if you can.

Steven Stamkos – Two goals and an assist in the blowout lo ss to Dallas. Really good at the hockey.

Jonathan Drouin – Two assists with two shots.  Whatever you can do to acquire him if you don’t own him in dynasty leagues, it’s probably worth it.

Jamie Benn – Goal and assist with 2 shots.  Long overdue.

Tyler Seguin – Same line as Benn.  LONG OVERDUE!

Jason Spezza – Same line as Benn and Seguin.  Not overdue because he just had a hat trick but still really good at the hockey!

Jaromir Jagr – Two goals and an assist on 3 shots.  What a boss.

Aleksander Barkov – Goal plus assist on 6 shots.  I said it before the season, I’ll say it again.  ADD HIM NOW!  He’s really good at hockey; 60+ points is completely reasonable.

Troy Brouwer – Two assists and 1 shot.  Must own now in 10+ man leagues playing second line and second power play in St. Louis.

Jori Lehtera – Goal and assist with two shots.  Really sucks he is on the third line so the upswings will be nice but still wouldn’t add him in 12 man leagues.

Paul Stastny – Goal and assist with 3 shots in 20 minutes.  The first line in St. Louis with Alex Steen (goal +assist and 5 shots) and Vladimir Tarasenko (Goal with 4 shots and 2 PIM) is clicking so get as much stock in it as you can.

Taylor Hall – Goal and 6 shots and 4 PIM in 23:35.  Looking incredible right now with this massive ice time.

Zach Parise – Goal and assist.  Hotter than any player in the league right now.

Thanks for reading guys! I will post my streamers for the day in the comments section below today when I get a grasp on the bigger slate tonight.  As always, post any questions and comments you have below.  Next week, now that the season is getting underway, I will have contributors posting on their thoughts on the early season plus my recaps.  Enjoy your weekend Razzball Nation!

Are you worried about Niemi at all?

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

@Connor: not really. I still expect him to be the main goalie, Lindy Ruff will ride him eventually. One bad game won’t change that. I would probably own Lehtonen with Niemi if you have the roster spot though and simply roll the Stars starting goalie every night. Should get tons of wins and decent to good stats.

Viz, would u drop Hornqvist or Bjugstad for Domi?

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

@Cohen: if it’s not a keeper league, I’d probably hold. Bjugstad and Domi is close though but I definitely wouldn’t cut Hornqvist.

      • Cohen says:

        @Viz: thank u

Should I be concerned about Varlamov right now? He’s scaring me.

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

@PancakeMaker: A little bit because the Avs are one of the worst possession teams in the league so Varlamov is going to face a lot of shots. He’s still going to have a very good save percentage in time and going to play a ton of games so I wouldn’t panic and cut him or anything like that.

Hey Viz, thanks for the write up. Good stuff.

I wanted to ask you about Val Nichushkin and what you think about him. Is he ever going to get his shit together and realize his talent? I feel like we have been waiting for this guy for three years now. I know he has had some injury issues, but seemed healthy coming into this season. Played the first two games and now seems to be a healthy scratch the last couple. Should I expect him to see the ice again soon and possibly earn a top 6 role in the near future or is that just wishful thinking? Thanks!

    • WalleyWorld says:
      (link)

@WalleyWorld: Also would like to find out who I should try and trade to acquire Drouin in a dynasty league. Possible options include Galchenyuk, Huberdeau, Teravainen, Larkin, E. Lindholm, Duclair. Give up 1 or a combination of those guys to try and land him? Thanks again!

      • Viz

        Viz says:
        (link)

@WalleyWorld: Thanks! I’m not a huge fan like some are but in the long term, I think he has the potential to be a true first liner. There are two problems for him for this season though. First off, he’s still only 20 years old and since he missed most of last season, he lost a key year of development. Two, the Stars are loaded so they don’t need to force him into the top 6. I expect him to play regularly but I’m not sure he gets into the top 6 unless gets hurt or struggles badly.

In a dynasty, I’d trade any of those guys for Drouin. I would maybe trade two of them but I think it’d have to be Lindholm as the second guy. Trading two of the others would probably be an overpay even though Drouin could be a top 20 fantasy player in a year or two.

I just dropped jaden schwarts for barkov in a league with faceoff wins, ppg, ppa, hits, and blocks. It was impulsive after watching he was having a good game haha.

Was that a good pick up? im in a 7 man league so there actually a lot of jaden schwarts type players still on the wire.

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

@mehdan: I’m not sure I would have cut Schwartz but I don’t know who else you have on your roster. With those categories, I don’t mind it though since Barkov is solid across the board.

      • mehdan says:
        (link)

        Here’s my line up.

        Joe Pavelski
        Tyler Seguin
        Claude Giroux
        David Backes
        Henrik Zetterberg
        Jeff Carter
Aleksander Barkov – replaced Jaden Schwartz
        Patrick Kane
        Gustav Nyquist
Justin Abdelkader – mainly for hits and some production
        Brent Burns
        Drew Doughty
        Kris Letang
        Oliver Ekman-Larsson
        Justin Faulk

        Devan Dubnyk
        Martin Jones
        Roberto Luongo

League is roto and tracks G, A, +/-, PIM, PPG, PPA, SHP, GWG, SOG, FW, HIT, BLK, W, GAA, SV%, SHO

Went high on centers and low on goalies, and went for offensive defense men but pretty much botched my +/- with Faulk and OEL haha. Jason Spezza is also on the board but i need hits and blocks so i thought barkov might be better with upside.

        • Viz

          Viz says:
          (link)

@mehdan: I’d probably dump Carter for Spezza then. You won’t lose out on the faceoffs, Carter is no different when it comes to hit and blocks and he has more points upside. You can also use that spot to stream guys who are good with hits and blocks if you’re behind there.

          • mehdan says:

            Thanks!

Just got offered Rick Nash for Drouin in a non-keeper. I have to do that right? Standard Yahoo scoring.

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@Steve: Yeah, for this season only I think it’s Nash and it’s not that close.

  7. Ben says:
    (link)

I just traded Artemi Panarin for Logan Couture (yes I know he’s hurt) and I’m feeling pretty good about it. I just came here to gloat, really.

I’ll stash him on the IR and add some other likely flash in the pan forward. Would you recommend others do something similar if they can? I think some are all too quick to get rid of inured players. The other owner could have easily stashed him on the IR.

    • Ben says:
      (link)

Also, we keep 5 players in our 10 team league and Couture could be one of them.

      • Viz

        Viz says:
        (link)

@Ben: Yeah, that’s a win for you for sure. Panarin looks really good right now but you got a proven top 50 player in return. If you can afford to take the hit in the short term, it’s definitely worth it. You can find guys who are hot or stream the injured guys’ roster spot in the meantime.

  8. Jared says:
    (link)

Pasternak with RW/LW eligibility or Barkov with only C. I’ve already got Spezza and Larkin as straight C’s. Normal stats/h2h/keep 3.

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

@Jared: How many guys do you start and what positions do you use? I think Barkov is better right now but if it’s a big deal that you’re limiting yourself to a straight center, it’s close enough that you can go with Pastrnak.

My goalies are holtby and howard. I have an offer of Fred anderson and mrazek for holtby. Yes or no?

Cats are W. Sv%. GAA. SO

    Thanks

dynasty, have dubnyk/pavelec/mason, i could IR mason to grab neuvirth, or grab C.anderson recently dropped. Only 47 moves left on year, if not for that i’d have already grabbed Neuvirth, even if it’s just short term work.

      • Let Us Now Praise Famous Death Dwarves says:
        (link)

@Viz: damn, we got waivers set so it’s inverse standings at all times, and i’m 4th from bottom, a 2nd to bottom team grabbed him.

  11. Let Us Now Praise Famous Death Dwarves says:

10 teamer with hits/blocks/SHP/GWG added to normal stuff. Super shallow league. wondering who should be my streamer if anybody or any drops. (keep 6 league). start only 2 of each forward, 3 D, 2 goalies. No shots as a category. 2 IR’s, but no IR+’s, so Shattenkirk can’t be slotted.
    C- crosby/thornton/e.staal
LW – palat/hall/foligno/steen (these last 3 could also be centers)
    RW backes/wingels/okposo
    D carlson/shattenkirk/faulk/byfuglien
    G – allen/mrazek/luongo
All of Hanzal/Larkin/Ehlers/Stastny/Lee/Jagr are available. Wingels gets the hits, but little else. If i turn his spot into streamer spot i’d have only 2 RW left. I could make up his hits with streaming though. Wondering if i should make a 2nd spot (staal maybe?) the streamer spot and i keep a RW that produces pts for Wingels’ spot (Jagr/Ehlers). Or just Larkin/Hanzal/Stastny to be kept over Staal.

      • Let Us Now Praise Famous Death Dwarves says:
        (link)

@Viz: i keep forgetting byfuglien can also slot into RW spot, so not as thin as i thought.

        • Viz

          Viz says:
          (link)

@Let Us Now Praise Famous Death Dwarves: That definitely helps; I would definitely turn Wingels into a stream spot then. You have a backup on D and RW then in one game and then obviously the extra centers.
