Hey guys!  This is a two part podcast looking at some general draft strategy plus a draft recap.  First, I’m joined by Reid who is completely frustrated by his draft in my RCL.  All of the f-bombs! We do a thorough breakdown of each of our picks, looking at each pick, why we took them, whether it was a mistake or not, and then general draft strategy.  Spoiler: we forgot to take defensemen.  To follow along, here is our draft recap link . ChicagoCanuck is my hero for putting Reid on epic tilt!  After that, Matt makes his first appearance on the podcast to talk about his goaltending rankings.  We look at his tiers, goalies he’s high and low on and then a general strategy overview when it comes to how he drafts goalies.  All of that and more in today’s podcast:

now with this in 14 team dynasty with PPP, SHP, shots, hits, shot %,blocks added h2h.
    C o’reilly/carter/horvat/kadri/zibanejad
    LW jenner/skinner/ennis/n.ritchie/sharp
    RW tarasenko/eberle/smith-pelly/rattie/oshie
D karlsson/spurgeon/orpik/martinez/murray/gudas/ellis (wasn’t able to draft nurse since we got a new owner and he was allowed to keep nurse since nurse wasn’t promoted by previous owner and then that owner didn’t show up to draft)
IR+ soshnikov (looks like i gotta drop him or rattie when he returns if nobody else makes IR/IR+ by then)
    G quick/rinne/lehner

got 2 trade offers (the one you’ve seen before)
    1. my quick + 2nd rounder 2017
    for
    lundqvist + mcdonaugh
and if i did this one i’d have to drop a D man (murray or spurgeon i suppose)

    2. my eberle + 2nd + 3rd rounders 2017
    for
    phaneouf + coyle
and would have to drop somebody (either both of soshnikov/rattie or one of murray/spurgeon)

    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: don’t think both of them are good to do, i’d have to drop quite a few people, but of course if i did both my D would improve drastically. and i checked, i thought lundqvist was more than only 3 years older than quick, so maybe those two aren’t that far apart, and maybe it would be best to do both of these deals, or just the quick one. with the group of phaneouf/mcdonagh/orpik/gudas i’d be VERY solid in PIMs/hits/blocks and ONLY ellis being weak in those out of all my D men. or drop orpik and keep one of spurgeon/murray.

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: Yeah, I think the first one is very close. my first instinct is to do it beacuse McDonagh is a big add and like you said, the age difference between Quick and Hank isn’t that big. Lundqvist always has a better save percentage than Quick and wins probably won’t be far off. I’m kind of biased here but I have Lundqvist ahead of Quick in my rankings already and you’re adding one of my favorite defensemen this year. Because of how many bruisers you have, you can have a guy like Eberle perfectly fine and his upside points wise is too high for me to move him in that trade.

@Viz: OOPS, in the eberle one I GET the 2nd and 3rd rounders not give. this still too little to do?

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: if this helps, here’s who went this year’s 2nd round
            Tyson Jost COL – C
            Kieffer Bellows lw
            Alex DeBrincat LW, CHI
            Jake Bean D
            Julian Gauthier Car- RW
Jacob Chychrun D ARI sent to farm roster.

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: only ritchie from somebody not having room (and later pretending to claim he should have rights since “he forgot” to promote him from farm before draft per rule, while he DID promote the other 4 guys he needed to) to promote

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: Oh, that does make things a lot closer and now I’m thinking about saying yes. Do Phaneuf’s extra stats really move the needle for you? Or Coyle’s extra hits? I am quite high on Coyle this year since he’ll be on the first line on an improved team.

                • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
                  (link)

@Viz: well the pts of mcdonagh (blocks too) of hits/blocks/PIMs of phaneouf (with some points) would allow me to drop orpik (pretty much a lesser gudas with injury risk) and who else on D? murray probably. i’d lose some points on eberle to coyle maybe (probably shots too), but i may have made those up going from orpik/murray to phaenouf/mcdonagh.

                  • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
                    (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: it’s hard to tell how many points/shots/hits/blocks i need with this team as i came into it late last year (but did go from 13th to 9th in the time i was there).

16 team roto dynasty with hits/blocks/faceoff wins and losses/PPP/SHP/shots/shot %, shots against for goalies added. team is based around TB and has to have at least 6 of them at all times
start real life rosters with 4 BN (23 total) and up to 7 man minor list (up to 100 games for skaters and 50 for goalies)

IR (infinite stash slots it’s fantrax) callahan/bogosian (don’t have to drop if they are still injured in a few days, don’t count against active roster in that event)
    G vasilevsky/bishop
    minors: barbashev/c.white/zacha/crouse/kempe/chabot/nedeljkovic
gotta drop at least at 3, more to be able to draft anybody, i have the 12th slot in every round
    2. is pirri good enough to keep if i can trade b.sutter for him? (sutter is gotta be one of the drops)
here’s some of who’s available in FA: (all 2016 drafted players), radulov, zajac, stempniak, gudas, maroon.

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

@Sinkhole Demayo: I don’t think so, Pirri will probably be on the fourth line for the Rangers this year. Your team is very strong, you have some difficult decisions as for who to cut. I think on defense is has to be Wideman or Garrison, dropping two of those forwards is quite a problem. I would say Filppula and then Callahan even when he comes back?

      • Sinkhole Demayo says:
        (link)

@Viz: how many of this year’s drafted guys would you have ahead of chabot/kempe (who seem to be my weakest prospects)? if i drop filppula/garrison/wideman i’d have room to draft one guy, or could drop one of the prospects (or sutter) and draft 2.

        • Viz

          Viz says:
          (link)

@Sinkhole Demayo: I agree that they are and that you should be able to get better prospects fairly easily, this was a pretty deep draft. I guess I’d drop Kempe too and take 2 guys.

        • Sinkhole Demayo says:
          (link)

@Sinkhole Demayo: of course unless some really good prospect fell to me at 12th i’d be going for radulov.

          • Sinkhole Demayo says:
            (link)

@Sinkhole Demayo: we came out of yahoo last year, moved to fantrax (lost at least 5 owners from that alone), upped the minor slots from 5 to 7, and are having a slow minor guys draft (NOT 2016 drafted guys though) in the last 3 weeks. some teams that were prospect neglected are still loading up now.

    It’s a 10 category 12 team H2H league with the categories being:
    Goals/Assists/+-/PPP/Hits/Blocks/Wins/Sv %/Gaa/SHO

Since it was my first draft in 10 years, I didn’t know shit. When you don’t know shit you make it fun. I decided to name my team Thor’s Manmer and draft only vikings, that means only full blooded Nordic men whose ancestors went raiding and pillaging the countryside and burninating the peasants.
As an aside, I realize Johansen is technically Canadian born, but let’s be real, the blood of Norwegian berserkers runs true in his veins
    .
    C: Ryan Johansen
    C: Henrik Sedin
    W: Filip Forsberg
    W: Lou Eriksson
    W: Patric Hornqvist
    W: Nikolaf Ehlers
    D: Erik Karlsson
    D: Oliver Ekman-Larsson
    D: Rasmus Ristolainen
    UTL: Gustav Nyquist
    Bench:
    Hampus Lindholm
    Mikko Koivu
    Teuv Teravainen

    G: Pekka Rinne
    G: Frederik Andersen
    Kari Lehtonen

It’s a 5 man keeper league. In retrospect I fucked up not taking the most embryonic of vikings in Laine. Thoughts from the masters themselves? Also who would your 5 keepers be? I was thinking Johansen/Forsberg/Ehlers/Karlsson/Ekman-Larsson.

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@RickJamesBetch: I just responded to your post in the forum… In short, I think Johansen, Forsberg, Karlsson and OEL are automatic and then the fifth should be Rinne or Ehlers.
