People were asking for the rankings to be placed in one list so here you go. The only note is that Marko Dano is starting the season in the AHL (damn you Chicago!), so keep an eye on him to see if he’s recalled but he’s undraftable in 12-man leagues now.  Hope your drafts go well, look forward to drafting with some of you the next couple nights in RCL’s! If you’d like to join, there are still leagues open here.

  1. Ben says:

I appreciate you making some bold predictions and not just regurgitating the same old rankings. Looking at your rankings my team should be pretty sharp next year.

    ESPN 10 Team H2H 3 Keeper

    E Kane
    Anders Lee
    Ryan Strome
    Brayden Schenn
    Dustin Brown

    Erik Johnson

That’s right, 9 defensemen at the moment! Dustin Brown and Gudas are my current expendables and I’ll probably use my 7 weekly transactions to stream in those spots.

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@Ben: No problem! Looks really good adding hits to the equation. How many guys at each position are you starting? I agree with the streaming plan, just curious what your best route is to attack that.

      • Ben says:

My strategy for the streaming spots:

        – Adding hot forwards
        – More Goons
        – Maximizing games played (back to backs)
        – Spot starting backup goalies
        – Targeting specific stats (especially late in the week)

Sometimes the music stops and I hold what I have.

        We start:

        – 9 forwards (no C/LW/RW requirement)
        – 5 defensemen
        – 2 utility
        – 2 goalies

        • Viz

          Viz says:

@Ben: Gotcha, yeah that all makes sense. I might go down to 8 D but whatever, you can adjust while you stream. Not a big deal at all

  2. PancakeMaker says:

Would you cut Chris Stewart for Andrej Nestrasil? I’m intrigued by the upside of Nestrasil but part of me also wants to see which line Stewart slots in on with Anaheim, I haven’t seen much news about that.

    • PancakeMaker says:

@PancakeMaker: And I should add this is a deep 10 team dynasty league where JT Miller is also available, but I’m pretty stacked at C (assuming that’s where Miller actually plays, ESPN sucks when it comes to positional eligibility in hockey).

      • Viz

        Viz says:

@PancakeMaker: Miller should get LW soon, even on ESPN. ESPN is usually just slow getting to the correct positions but they get there. There is talk that Stewart will start the season with Getzlaf but I can’t imagine Getzlaf and Perry will stay separate for long. I’d lean towards Miller long term and if you’re worried about somebody grabbing him, make the move, but if not, start with Stewart and see how he does the first couple games.

  3. Slimbo says:

    Thanks for this!

In a 8 team keeper league with hits….

drop seabrook, abdelkader or ribeiro for any of these guys?

clutterbuck, orpik, markov, kronwall or stralman

    Plekenec is also available

    Thx 🙂

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@Slimbo: I have Markov and Stralman ahead of Seabrook in my rankings but that doesn’t include hits. I don’t know how those guys do in hits (I assume that Seabrook is best?) so it’s probably close and depends on what stats you need. I’d lean towards cutting Seabrook for Markov. Unless you’re in big need of assists, I’d drop Ribeiro for Plekanec too. The lack of shots from Ribiero is a killer.

    • goodfold2 says:

@Slimbo: if all you needs is hits and blocks orpik was best in league last year, and unlike most of the guys really good at those (polak) they aren’t on shitty teams. Stone on ARI is great too and will get some pts, but plus minus on ARI will be awful. Orpik won’t get hardly any pts or shots though.

  4. Hello Viz. I have 3 D slots and did not put any on my bench. I have Karlsson, Shattenkirk and I took a late flyer on Chara, who is DTD. Do any of these D-men sound kike an upgrade to Chara; Justin Schultz, Rasmus Ristolainen, Adam Larsson, Olli Maatta, Matt Irwin, Nikita Zadorov? T.J. Brodie is Out, but available for a stash on IR. Also, keeping an eye on Derrick Pouliot, if Letang goes down. Thanks!

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@madden_curser: I have Schultz highest on my rankings but that’s all for special teams points. It depends on your forwards but Karlsson and Shattenkirk have them in spades. It depends on the categories but I would probably take the shot on Olli Maatta. There’s a ton of upside there which Chara doesn’t have anymore.

            Viz says:

@madden_curser: No problem! That is very heavy towards the non-scoring categories. I think I’d hold Chara then since hits and blocked shots are huge. Schultz is close because he will have big games with that point system but Chara will be more consistent.

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@mcBlunty: Goalies are incredible as is your defense. You seemed to get enough offense too despite taking what I presume was 2 early picks on goalies. It looks like you’re a bit short of PIM? That said, you can always stream guys like Roussel at the end of the week if you’re behind there. Not sure I’d want to cut anyone on your roster for a PIM guy.

  6. Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:

how’s this one look. my only shallow league. 10 teams short rosters with hits/blocks but no faceoffs. start 2 of each forward, 3 D, 2 G, 1 util
. one of those leagues where i can just stream probably two roster slots on the daily. no add maximums.
    C -crosby (keeper)
    – Hall (keeper
    – e.staal (6th)
    – thornton (10th, from lack of goals and hits/block this is probably forward stream spot)
    LW – Foligno (keeper)
    – couture (keeper)
    – palat (7th)
    RW – okposo (keeper)
    – backes (1st round, post keepers, could’ve gone landeskog here, but needed RW more)
    – wingels (11th)
    D – Byfuglien (keeper)
    – carlson (3rd)
    – faulk (5th)
    – kronwall (8th, this is likely stream D spot)
    G – luongo (2nd)
    allen (4th)
    mrazek (9th)

      • Viz

        Viz says:

@Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: Pretty good looking squad, no top tier goalie but you have 3 quality goalies instead. Defense is incredible and I would have gone Backes in your spot too. It depends what you want to do. As a keeper, Domi has a bunch of value but he blocks you from streaming that spot. I’d take a wait and see approach on Domi.

        • Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:

@Viz: all tippy top tiers were saved, would’ve had to go dubnyk or one other guy in 1st round over backes, wasn’t doing that in a 10 teamer where i knew i could get three quality guys.

  7. ashtray says:

Is there a tier listing on this site?

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@ashtray: There is not but I’ll post a quick breakdown below:
      Crosby to Benn
      Price to Getzlaf
      Pavelski to Karlsson
      Kopitar to Subban
      Wheeler to Andersen
      Monahan to Simmonds
Halak to Spezza (big tier with category and position needs a big factor)
      Datsyuk to Perron
      Staal to Klingberg
      Marleau to Streit
      JVR to Ramo
      Schultz to Mrazek
      Franson to Schenn
      Cammallieri to Stralman
      Koivu to Perreault

          Viz says:

          @ashtray: No problem!

  8. Derek says:

Wow what are the settings for your rankings?

If it includes shots I don’t know how you have Ovechkin that far down at 6.

I myself ranked out players in a hits blocks league and have
    1. Ovechkin
    2. Benn
    3. Crosby
    4. Karllson
    5. Stamkos
    6. Malkin
    7. Seguin
    8. Johanson
    9. Tavares
    10. Taylor Hall

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@Derek: I use 6 offensive categories: goals, assists, +/-, PIM, SOG and STP. I’m not a fan of using additional categories, especially hits because they are not an official stat. I did not do the top 25 myself and didn’t adjust them. Personally, I would have Ovechkin 2 behind Crosby but as listed above, I have the top 7 in the same tier and can see justification for moving them around in almost any order.

  9. Connor says:

Care to offer me some general advice for my league? H2H points, 10 teams. Rosters are 1F, 2C, 2RW, 2LW, 4D, 1U, 2G, 6BE. Scoring is 3 for goals, 2 for assists, 1 for +/-, 0.4 for SOG, 0.2 for hits. For goalies its 4 for wins, -1 for GA, 0.1 for saves, and 2 for shutouts.

Am I correct in thinking I shouldn’t really target goalies at all? And defensemen would be pushed back a bit in your rankings?

And how do I go about streaming? I’m the guy that made 400+ moves on my fantasy baseball team, but I don’t have that same knowledge for NHL. We get 7 pickups a week if that makes a difference.

    • Ben says:

See my post above for how I use my 7 weekly transactions.

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@Connor The biggest thing is guys who take a lot of shots gain even more value. Pass first guys value are almost completely loss in a system like that. I would definitely wait on defensemen and boost the value of heavy shot defenseman like the top 3, Byfuglien, Burns and OEL. I still think goalies hold a fair amount of value but you need goalies on winning teams; wins are worth over 50% of goalies projected points so wins are almost all that matters. I definitely wouldn’t be taking goalies in the first couple rounds though.

  10. Interested in some feed back… feel like a little light on PIMs, but feeling confident on my draft results, as 8 of my players on in the top 50 of these rankings

    Taylor Hall
    Jaden Schwartz
    San Bennett
    Tyler Ennis

    Brent Burns

    Cory Schneider
    Eddie Lack

    any thoughts would be appreciated…

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@jonathan chasin: Yeah you are a little light in PIM but you should crush the rest of the categories, it’s a stacked team offensively. I wouldn’t worry about too much about it, especially in a head to head league.

      • jonathan chasin says:

        @viz- it’s a 10 team H2H league… with bonuses for fights…
        5 points for Major Penalties
        3.5 for misconducts
        .5 for PIM

any players that you can suggest, that may be under the radar… or that I could trade for?

  11. Slimbo says:

    Which dman is more droppable

    Jack Johnson or Seabrook

    Thx for everything you provide

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@Slimbo: If you can absorb the potentially bad plus-minus, I’d keep Johnson and cut Seabrook. There’s little upside to Seabrook, he’s probably going to get around 30-35 points with little PIM and possibly little STP with Trevor Daley there. If Johnson gets good PP time as expected, he can be a pleasant surprise as a late pick. No problem!

  12. goodfold2 says:

20 teamer. i dropped backlund (CGY) to gamble on getting back bonino but at pick 19 no go.
    C crosby/turris/backlund/larkin/fabbri
    LW – kunitz/dupuis/burakovsky/bailey/couture
    RW – malkin/downie/wingels/hornqvist
D orpik/letang/maatta/daley/despres/stone (now first pair, dude already was a hits + blocks beast considering he actually scores some pts, other hits + blocks guys don’t, excepting top tier guy you simply can’t get in 20 team leagues)
    G fleury/c.anderson
NA pouliot/fiala/morrisey/kapanen/barbashev/timo meier (sounds like a good power winger)

Fabbri is getting the 8 game tryout, i’ll have to wait to get 7th D man after that. With Kapanen hitting NA who is dropped now, and a 2nd NA has to be dropped later (it would be neat if pouliot just came back up soon, would alleviate the 2nd drop). I’m guessing Meier and Barbashev. All yahoo stats here though, so Kapanen/Fiala probably have less value than in standard leagues. Morrisey appears to be an all around contributor at some point. Was nice to see Morrisey and Larkin not kept.

  13. Slimbo says:

    Drop abdelkader for Larkin?

    • Joey Jo Jo Jr Shabadoo says:

@Slimbo: if you need hits don’t. depends a lot on what kind of league this is both size and stats.

  14. Potvin's CUPS says:

I’m shocked after reading the comment sections that it sounds like mostly everybody’s league reward pim’s. My league (h2h points not categories) pim’s are -.25 per minute. Why reward penalties?

Also, in my of league Ovi is far and away superior to anyone else, had 400 points last season, next highest was Tavares with 290. I just became commish this season and wanted to make changes in the scoring but didn’t get any feedback so I left it alone

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@Potvin’s CUPS: I’m not sure the reasoning behind it to be honest. I assume your league is super heavy towards shots on goal and power play goals then but I’d have to look at the whole system.

      • Potvin's CUPS says:

        @Viz: 8 team league, points:
        G=2. A=1. PIM= -.25/min. PPG=2.5. PPA=1.5. SHG=3. SHA=2. GWG=4. SOG=.25 Hits=.25
        Start=1. Win=3. Loss= -1. Goal Against = -.5. Save=.1. Shut Out=5

I never understood why PP points are worth more than 5v5 or why 5 saves negates a goal against (.833 save %). But i didn’t set up the league, I have inherited it and no one commented on the changes i proposed so I didn’t want to rock the boat.

Getslaf, Hall, T. Johnson, Monahan, Duchene
        Ovechkin, Nyquist, Schwartz
        Wheeler, Hossa, Hornqvist
        Karlsson, Keith, Leddy, Jack Johnson
        Bobrovsky, Mason

I will end up dropping someone to stream a 3rd goalie when needed after coaches settle into line combinations

        • Viz

          Viz says:

@Potvin’s CUPS: Agreed, I like as a separate category in leagues but in points league, I’m not a fan, especially to the extent your league rewards them. That team is absolutely loaded though even for 8 man. I would guess that Jack Johnson will be most expendable although that depends on how many defensemen you start.

  15. WalleyWorld says:

Thanks for the rankings! I have a few dynasty trade offers after putting simmonds and JVR on the block.

    was offered
    Huberdeau and Barkov for JVR/Simmonds
    Huberdeau for simmonds straight up
Patrick Kane and Klingberg for JVR/Simmonds

anything there to pique your interest ? i can take the hit short term if I’m getting superstars in huberdeau/barkov long term. like the kane deal too but i already have kessel and tarasenko at rw. i could use kessel to try and swing kane in another deal if huberdeau and barkov are worth it. thanks for any advice.

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@WalleyWorld: Responded to your other post. In the future, you only need to post once, I get emails notifying me when people post. Thanks!

  16. Running Frog says:

There’s a typo in your list in Mark Scheifele’s name. Only reason I know is I was making some first week moves and went looking to see where you had him ranked. Was a bit surprised search didn’t find him.

Thanks for the work you put in. I drafted ENTIRELY off of your list in one of my free leagues. And if you love your own ratings, you should love this team:

    P Kane
    F Forsberg
    E Kane
    N Backstrom

Goalies are light, but I always have good success with midseason goalie moves. I’ll drop a forward for an extra D shortly.

    Thanks again!

    • Viz

      Viz says:

@Running Frog: No problem! That team is loaded, well done. Just stay on top of goalie updates with injuries, poor play etc. and you’ll be in terrific shape.
