With the All-Star Break coming to a close and the schedule ready to pick up for the home stretch, it’s time for an update to my hold/stream list. The one thing that I want to add is that for head to head leagues, I would be far more aggressive in cutting players that are missing time if you’re in a battle for a playoff spot, and if you are locked into the top of your standings, I would be more focused on setting up my team for once the playoffs begin. In roto, it all depends where you are in terms of your starts. Let’s get to it!
ANAHEIM DUCKS
Fringe: Terry (lean hold), Zegras (lean hold), Fowler (lean hold)
Stream: Strome, Vatrano, McTavish, Henrique, Klingberg
I had to add Adam Henrique to the list while he’s on PP1 and the first line. Mason McTavish is also on PP1 now and receiving more minutes, elevating him up the streamer ladder.
Things have gotten so bad for Anaheim that even their studs are on the fringe.
ARIZONA COYOTES
Hold: Gostisbehere, Keller, Chychrun
Stream: Crouse, Schmaltz, Maccelli
BOSTON BRUINS
Hold: Bergeron, Marchand, Pastrnak, DeBrusk, McAvoy, Lindholm
Fringe: DeBrusk (when healthy), Krejci (lean stream)
Stream: Hall, Coyle, Zacha, Grzelcyk, Swayman
BUFFALO SABRES
Hold: Thompson, Dahlin, Tuch, Skinner, Cozens
Fringe: Power (lean stream)
Stream: Quinn, Peterka, Olofsson, Anderson
CALGARY FLAMES
Hold: Kadri, Huberdeau, Lindholm, Andersson
Fringe: Toffoli (lean hold)
Stream: Backlund, Mangiapane, Dube, Coleman, Weegar, Hanifin, Vladar
I admit that it could be wrong for me to continue to give Calgary guys the benefit of the doubt, namely Huberdeau. My assumption is that nobody on the wire is worth swapping him for because of the upside gap.
CAROLINA HURRICANES
Hold: Aho, Svechnikov, Necas, Burns
Fringe: Skjei (lean hold)
Stream: Teravainen, Jarvis, Noesen, Pesce, Slavin
Brady Skjei has made a massive rise in the last month. He’s getting PP1 time lately and while he’s below average in assists, he’s good everywhere else, so I’d be holding for the time being.
CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS
Stream: Kane, Toews, Domi, Athanasiou, S. Jones
I really don’t want anything to do with these guys right now. If you want to grab Patrick Kane close to the deadline for a potential trade, okay, but he has real hip issues and I don’t see a bounce back coming.
COLORADO AVALANCHE
Hold: MacKinnon, Rantanen, Lehkonen, Nichushkin, Landeskog (when healthy), Makar, Toews, Byram (when healthy)
Stream: Rodrigues, Compher, Newhook, Girard
On the bright side, it looks like Bowen Byram could be back on Tuesday, and if not, not much after that. That should do wonders for the Avalanche in general.
COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
Hold: Gaudreau, Laine
Stream: Jenner, Roslovic, Johnson, Marchenko, Boqvist (when healthy), Bjork (if out of AHL)
You can make a case for Boone Jenner being on the fringe, but I’m not quite there. Kirill Marchenko is a big riser lately from off the radar to middling streamer.
DALLAS STARS
Hold: Robertson, Hintz, Pavelski, Heiskanen
Stream: Benn, Marchment, Seguin, Johnston
DETROIT RED WINGS
Hold: Larkin, Perron, Seider, Hronek
Stream: Kubalik, Raymond, Copp, Bertuzzi, Berggren
No surprise, Moritz Seider is back on track now that he’s been separated from Chiarot.
EDMONTON OILERS
Hold: McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman, RNH, Kane (when healthy), Nurse, Barrie
Stream: Bouchard, Holloway
FLORIDA PANTHERS
Hold: Barkov, Tkachuk, Verhaeghe, Reinhart, Ekblad, Montour, Forsling
Fringe: Bennett (lean streamer)
Stream: Lundell, Luostarinen, Gudas
LOS ANGELES KINGS
Hold: Kopitar, Fiala, Doughty
Fringe: Durzi (lean stream), Kempe (lean stream)
Stream: Vilardi, Danault, Arvidsson, Moore (when healthy), Anderson-Dolan, Byfield, Roy
The Kings have to provide the most streaming options in the league. Even Anze Kopitar is closer to the fringe, but I kept him as a hold because of his strong play before the break.
MINNESOTA WILD
Hold: Kaprizov, Zuccarello, Eriksson Ek
Fringe: Boldy (lean hold)
Stream: Gaudreau, Hartman, Steel, Addison, Spurgeon
MONTREAL CANADIENS
Hold: Suzuki
Stream: Dach, Hoffman, Matheson, Xhekaj
NASHVILLE PREDATORS
Hold: Forsberg, Josi
Fringe: Duchene (lean hold)
Stream: Granlund, Niederreiter, Johansen, Glass, Parssinen, Ekholm
NEW JERSEY DEVILS
Hold: Hischier, Hughes, Bratt, Hamilton
Stream: Zetterlund, Tatar, Mercer, Palat, Sharangovich, Wood
NEW YORK ISLANDERS
Hold: Barzal, Horvat, Nelson, Lee, Dobson
Stream: Palmieri, Pulock, Bolduc
I look forward to seeing how the Isles look, both at even strength and the power play, with Bo Horvat, who just inked an 8 x 8.5m extension. The Brinks Truck has been backed up.
NEW YORK RANGERS
Hold: Zibanejad, Panarin, Kreider, Fox
Stream: Trocheck, Kakko, Lafreniere, Chytil, Trouba
Vincent Trocheck‘s shot rate and points have been going in the wrong direction so I’d put him in the streamer category now.
OTTAWA SENATORS
Hold: Tkachuk, Stutzle, DeBrincat, Giroux, Chabot
Fringe: Batherson (lean stream)
Stream: Pinto, Greig, Sanderson
Drake Batherson is sitting at -30 now. I just can’t hold that in roto and it’s even dicey in H2H.
PHILADELPHIA FLYERS
Hold: Konecny
Fringe: Hayes, DeAngelo
Stream: JVR, Cates, Laughton, Tippett, Farabee, Provorov
PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Hold: Crosby, Guentzel, Malkin, Letang
Fringe: Rust (lean stream)
Stream: Rakell, Zucker, Petry
I was going to downgrade Bryan Rust to a pure streamer, but he was practicing on the first power play unit in Rakell’s place over break, so I’m keeping here up for now.
SAN JOSE SHARKS
Hold: Meier, Karlsson, Hertl
Fringe: Couture (lean streamer)
Stream: Labanc, Barabanov, Eyssimont
SEATTLE KRAKEN
Hold: Dunn
Fringe: Schultz (lean hold), Beniers (when healthy, lean hold), Burakovsky (lean streamer)
Stream: Bjorkstrand, Schwartz, Eberle, McCann, Tolvanen, Gourde, Sprong, Larsson
ST. LOUIS BLUES
Hold: Tarasenko, Buchnevich (when healthy), Kyrou, Thomas
Fringe: Faulk (lean hold)
Stream: Schenn, Saad, Barbashev, Krug
TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING
Hold: Kucherov, Stamkos, Point, Hedman, Sergachev
Fringe: Hagel (lean streamer)
Stream: Cirelli, Paul, Killorn, Colton
“Last time I did this, I said Brandon Hagel was probably going to be a hold because he was getting top PP time. He has, but it’s still fringe worthy.” And that’s me quoting me talking about two times ago! Well, Hagel has kept PP1, but now Tampa has loaded up their top line, which is a hit to Hagel’s value.
TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
Hold: Matthews (when healthy), Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Rielly
Fringe: Bunting (lean hold)
Stream: Jarnkrok, Giordano
With Matthews out, Michael Bunting is firmly on PP1. With his plus-minus and PIM contribution, I see a hold case, but the points are a bit lacking.
VANCOUVER CANUCKS
Hold: Pettersson, Miller, Hughes
Fringe: Kuzmenko, Boeser (both lean streamer)
Stream: Beauvillier, Garland, OEL
I want to see how this looks without Horvat. That can shift things for the guys on the fringe.
VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Hold: Eichel, Pietrangelo, Theodore
Fringe: Stephenson (lean streamer)
Stream: Marchessault, Smith, Cotter
With Mark Stone probably out for the season after back surgery, things are looking ugly for the Golden Knights. Maybe they go deeper into LTIR, but they scare me right now.
WASHINGTON CAPITALS
Hold: Ovechkin, Carlson (when healthy), Gustafsson (when Carlson out)
Fringe: Kuznetsov (lean hold)
Stream: Strome, Oshie, Johansson, Sheary, Orlov
WINNIPEG JETS
Hold: Scheifele, Connor, Ehlers, Dubois, Morrissey
Stream: Perfetti, Wheeler, Pionk
Three Point Challenge: We will do Tuesday’s games per usual. You can’t take McDavid, Draisaitl, Kucherov, Pastrnak, Thompson, Robertson, Karlsson, M. Tkachuk, Hughes, or Rantanen. I’ll go with Point against the Sharks
That’s all for now guys. I’ll be back on Wednesday recapping the action from tonight’s games. As always, feel free to ask any questions, leave any comments, or give any suggestions below. Thanks for reading, take care!
Josi for 3
Nichushkin for 3
Hold list 3.0 let’s go
You think ehlers moves back to first line. It says on depth chart he got moved to 4th line
as of most recent game he was the 2nd most used line in that game (17.7%) along with schefele/connor (from here: https://leftwinglock.com/line-combinations/winnipeg-jets/?team=winnipeg-jets&strength=EV&gametype=1)
he did also in that game play 3% of the time with stenlund/gagner my guess is the reason dailyfaceoff (and/or others) is noting him as a 4th liner was that 3%, which seems wrongheaded on their part. dailyfaceoff does right now show him as 4th liner, but i’d wait and see that actually happen before assuming it’s going that way, esp since it makes no sense.
Thanks for the info rope. I figured he won’t stay on the 4th but maybe the 3rd line. Don’t understand why they don’t keep dubois ehlers and Connor a line
Any way who would you guys rather have rest of season ehlers or forsberg
Thanks to the Rope for saving me some time… I really don’t get why they started out the game that way. I was really hopeful a new coach would finally give Ehlers the role he deserves, and while he gets it on PP1 now, he’s still not at even strength.
I have Ehlers and Forsberg very close. I lean towards Ehlers, but it’s riskier
agree ehlers over forsberg, close, and i’m guessing the riskier falls off if say he’s still mostly playing with top 2 line players like he did 17.7% of the time vs 3 not with them in the last game. unless you meant injury riskier, which makes sense. if hits in league forsberg is better at those, but the points upside i’d think better with who he plays with and WIN’s offense in general vs NAS’s.
Thanks guys. In a hits league with goals assists points plus /minus power play points, shots on goals,
How would you rank kreider ehlers and forsberg for rest of year
ehlers, forsberg, kreider
Second this
You still think Kocketkov is worth a hold in 12 teamers Viz ? I paly Roto so goalie starts are super valuable.
Also, with Byram returning tonight, what do you think are reasonable expectation for him, a D3 with upside ?
No, I don’t think so. You can hold just hoping for an injury, but I don’t really want to be holding guys in the minors.
I think more of a #4. The lack of real PP time really hurts (he could end up back on PP2, but PP1 in Colorado plays almost all of the minutes). Also, his shot rate is quite bad.
I’ve tried to be patient with Markstrom but at this point he is now looking like the backup to Vladar. In an 8 team league I probably should have dropped him weeks ago but having a hard time making the move. Is there anything you see as to why I should hold him? He’s been outperformed by waiver options like Grubauer, Rittich, DeSmith, Montembeault, and just about everyone else excluding those on Anaheim, San Jose, and Columbus.
I’ll take Stamkos for the challenge.
It would be more about the team than how Markstrom is playing himself. Calgary is still #7 in xG%, so if they get good goaltending (which we know he’s capable of), they should go on a big run. It’s a pure upside play, but yes, he’s been terrible, no way around that.
And another 5 goals given up last night. That’s it. I’m out on Markstrom.
Can’t blame you
This is a great hold/stream list, Viz. I’m trying to figure out whether to hold DeBrusk and Byram in a keeper points league now too.
I’ll stick with you in Tampa too, and take Stamkos for three.
Oof. Missed ashtray’s pick.
Let’s go Vince Dunn for three!
Thanks! Byram has a good chance to be back tonight so that would make things easier. DeBrusk is obviously tougher. You’re allowed to make the same pick for the record, but I’ll count Dunn unless you clarify before puck drop tomorrow.
Viz,
Aho, Rantanen, and Trouba or Elias Lindholm, Marchand, and Dougie Hamilton.
D core looks like this:
Hamilton, Montour, Dobson, and Schenn.
League is Yahoo roto, so G, A, PPP, SOG, Hits
Montour would become my D1 and Dobson my D2
So happy hockey is back !
Really depends on the rest of your team and how bad you’d need Trouba’s hits, as his contributions in the points categories are very poor. I don’t think he has much use considering you already have Schenn. That said, Rantanen > Marchand and Aho > Lindholm, so this really is a team needs decision.
So I can grab 2/3 more points in Hits, as I catch up in games played to the teams above. So while I could use them I’m not desperate…
What about if I subbed in Heiskanen for Trouba ?
So Aho, Rantanen, and Heiskanen for Lindholm, Marchand and Hamilton
This league I’m ahead by a far margin so I’m looking to Max my stats and give up quantity for quality
That I would do, dropoff from Dougie to Miro isn’t as big while you still upgrade at forward
Hi Viz
12 tm h2h pts
Dmen – G(5), PPG(1), A(3), PIM(0.25), +/- (1)
Pls Rank for ROS Byram, S.Jones, Forsling, Hanifin, Power
Crosby for 3 Vs COL
Always big THANKS!!
Hmm, so points do outweigh plus-minus quite a bit, which does help Jones, but obviously it’s still a negative. I’ll say Forsling, Byram, Jones, Power, Hanifin? I feel pretty good about Forsling first, but after that, it’s kind of a mess.
