It’s not even Christmas and Colorado has already traded away both of their goalies for replacements. They’re the first team since the epic tank 2014-15 Sabres to even trade both of their opening night goalies. After swapping backups weeks ago, they made their big swing on Monday, acquiring MacKenzie Blackwood from the San Jose Sharks, sending Alexandar Georgiev the other way along with a pick and depth player. So what will Colorado be getting, and what’s the fantasy impact?
Blackwood has been very good for the Sharks over the last two seasons, but especially this year. Despite being a dreadful team that hemorrhages chances, Blackwood is sitting with a .910 save percentage. He’s top 20 in the league in GSAA, which is a massive upgrade from what Colorado was getting from Georgiev and Annunen. Blackwood has always been a talented goalie, but he lost his game after injuries. The upside here is that Blackwood is a top ten fantasy goalie for the rest of the season. We saw it with Georgiev in his first season with the Avalanche, and others before him. The downside is Blackwood still has a very high GAA and the save percentage is worse facing less volume. That said, I have a really hard time seeing him being worse than a #2 in 12’ers, which means he is must own everywhere. He’s available in over 80% of leagues, and that needs to change immediately. There’s league winning upside here. I wouldn’t touch Georgiev with a ten foot pole at this point. Wedgewood looks to be a solid streamer, as he’s played great in his first three games for the Avs.
We also saw the Rangers trade Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks. I’m genuinely shocked that the Rangers were able to get any positive value for Trouba given the turmoil the team is currently in, plus Trouba’s contract for this season and next. Trouba went right onto the top pair for the Ducks on Monday with Fowler, playing over 22 minutes. I don’t really see his value changing at all. Trouba is a fine streamer for hits, PIM, and blocks, but the points have dried up so much that I don’t see anything else. Nothing really changes for the Rangers as well.
That’s all for now guys, I wanted to get a quick post up since I missed Monday. Be sure to check out Evan’s post for this week! I’ll be back tomorrow with my usual set of daily notes. Thanks for reading, take care!
