Just looking to see if I did the right thing. Keeper trade. 12 team points league where 13 players are kept. I traded Fiala, Boeser and Werenski for Pastrnak and Weber. The only reason i am unsure of this is i could be giving up on the season before it starts because Pasta is out for the first month or so.

    • Itookdonscherry says:
      (link)

Also. For my 13th keeper I have Clayton Keller, Martin Necas and Robert Thomas to choose from. Any advice and why you would choose that player?

    • Viz

      Viz says:

I think it depends how good your team is this year. Obviously, you’re taking a very big hit right now since Pastrnak will be out, but adding him long term is incredible. I see this as a fairly even trade so I’m good with it.

I would keep Thomas. He started to break out last season, and now he has a clear path to a big increase in playing time. I think Necas is reasonable as well, but I’m a big Thomas fan.

18 teamer that just became 16 teamer. keep max 23 (real life roster size exactly, max goalie rule as many as you want (this only applies to active, not NA or IR/IR+ slots) from ONE team and up to 1 from a 2nd team. i have the 16th (worst) draft slot in all rounds. cut which of these, presumably could improve by drafting at least once. i’ll list the useful players dropped from the 2 teams when we shrunk. dynasty obv. hits/blocks/faceoffs/PPP/SHP/shots/shooting %/goals/assists in here.
    C (4): hischier, e.staal, taveras, r-joey, steel
LW (4): stamkos (RW), r.strome (C), tuch (RW), rust (RW), beauvillier
RW (4) zucker (LW), tippett, c.white (C), batherson, kyrou (C), armia, kucherov (max IR/IR+ slots), tolvanen
D (6): pulock, risto, fox, nurse, hedman (yeah we’re seeing why i ended last year in 1st when NHL kicked out with about 3 weeks to go), i.cole (replaceable), irwin (same), valimaki (clearly top long term D guy, i’m now all the way up dobber’s ass for any sort of prospect stuff, if anybody’s even close i’ve never sniffed it)
G: (1): lehner, kuemper, raanta (from injuries was able to hoard up the ARI tandem late in year, before that was streaming the non lehner part)

just to get legal gotta cut 6 these easy: irwin, cole (if valimaki still down can add D6 later and NA him), raanta, armia: here is where it gets just ugly on long term values: i guess tolvanen, but who is the next drop (or 2 if i intend on drafting anybody)? kyrou/batherson/tippett seem pretty sick to drop in dynasties this deep.

available (not listing this year drafted as they all are obv): i’ll be back in here once keepers are better known.

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

Yeah, this is a really rough decision. I guess I would lean towards Kyrou? It hurts, but Tippett looks like he’s getting a real chance in the top six this year, possibly even the first line, and Batherson should get plenty of opportunity on a poor team as well

    Happy New Year!
Thank you for the great content. I’m relatively new to Fantasy Hockey and inherited a keeper team. Looking for some guidance for a 12 team H2H league.

    Here’s my squad

    F – Marchand
    F – Malkin
    F – Schlefel
    F – P Laine
    F – Markov
    F – Stasney
    F – R Thomas
    F – Eberle
    F – Arvidsson

    D – S Theodore
    D – T Barrie
    D – R Ellis
    D – Slavin
    D – M Petersson
    D – S Walker

    G – Vasilevsky
    G – Shesterkin
    Bench – Halak

Bench – Vrana, Schenn, T Wilson, Denault, Stasney

    Two questions –

1 – Should I trade Vasilevsky for the best forward I can get?
    2 – Should I trade Markov for
3 – Any other general thoughts?

Thank you so much and Happy New Year!

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

      1) No, your offense is stacked enough that I would definitely keep Vasilevskiy. Your goaltending would be a mess with Halak as your #2.

      2) I’m assuming you mean Barkov? Unclear for what here, let me know and I’ll give you an answer

3)Overall, I think your team is very strong, you did a great job drafting. No obvious weaknesses.

Thank you for the kind words!

Viz whats up my brother. Happy new year. Hope your doing well.

What are your thoughts on ty smith and holtz, do you think hotly makes the team .if so what line. are any potentially relevant?

    • Gerald says:
      (link)

      Potentially fantasy relevant*

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

Hey Gerald! Happy New Year to you as well! I’m doing fine all things considered, the Bills are rolling and hockey is about to start.

I like them both long term, especially long term. I don’t think Holtz is going to make the team, but honestly, I haven’t dug into the Devils deeply yet. If he does, I think they ease him in on the third line.

As for Smith, assuming he makes the team, he’ll be on the third pair to start. All indications are that Murray-Subban and Butcher-Severson will be the top two pairs. I assume that leaves Kulikov to play with Smith. I like him plenty long term, but it’s going to be hard to see an impact this year. I wrote about Johnsson in tomorrow’s post, but I do like him as a nice streamer with upside.

Would love to hear your thoughts here.
    Keep 2
    Vasilevkiy – 2nd round?
    Svechnikov – 5th round?
    Shesterkin – 8th round?

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

Depends on your league setup a bit, but I would throw back Vasilevskiy and keep the other two. Svechnikov in the fifth round is a no-brainer for me as I have him as a second rounder. Therefore, it’s down to the goalies, and while I have Vasielvskiy as the best goalie, I never want a goalie in the first two rounds, and Igor in the 8th is simply better value. I’d rather keep the second round slot open, and if you really want to, draft Vasilevskiy back in the second round. You’re never getting Igor back in the 8th, and considering his age, he’s a tier one keeper as well.

  6. DanTheNonHockeyFan says:

I am wondering if you can update the list to add team and position. I am new to hockey and will be doing a draft that only selects forwards and defensemen. Its a goals and assist league(2pts for a goal and 1pt for an assist).

I don’t really know much about the players so having that extra information will help me immensely

Thank for doing the list though.

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

I have separated the players by position in separate posts. I do not have teams though, but I don’t think it’s particularly relevant for your drafting.

  7. Christian Herman says:
    (link)

Tyler Bertuzzi didnt make the list. Any thoughts on him? And how would you rank the following:

    Burakovsky
    Robert Thomas
    Puljujarvi

    • Viz

      Viz says:
      (link)

He should be a decent streamer, but there are guys with more upside that I’d rather gamble on with my late picks in a standard 12’er. He gets more value in deep leagues for sure.

Puljujarvi is definitely last. To start, he’s going to be on the third line. I hope to God he moves up to the top line in Kassian’s spot eventually, but for now, I’m not looking to draft him.

I’m a big fan of both Thomas and Burakovsky. Honestly, it was an oversight on my part to not have Thomas ranked here. That said, I would put Burakovsky ahead of him since he’s going to start with MacKinnon and Rantanen.

I absolutely love your attention to detail with ranks / transparency in comments. Appreciate you explaining in detail like this, as a regular rank 1-4 would’ve sufficed. Thank you sir!!

Thanks! Usually I put even more time, but with the season rapidly approaching, I put more time into the positional rankings. It seems like everyone was happy with them. Any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

What is the league set up assumption for this list? Tom Wilson at 170 sticks out to me but I play mostly Hits/PIMs leagues where he’s way more valuable

Hits are not included, only PIM.

      G,A,+/-, PIM, SOG, STP
