The Ottawa Senators were plagued by injuries. Jason Spezza went down early in the season with back surgery. Star defenseman Erik Karlsson had his Achilles’ tendon rupture that cost him a majority of the season. Goaltender Craig Anderson suffered an ankle injury that cost him a good chunk of the season as well.
Grab a couple band aids and let’s look back at the Senators’ season.
Team Name: Ottawa Senators
Record: 25-17-6; Lost 4-1 to Pittsburgh in Eastern Conference Semifinals
Player of the Season: Anderson posted a 12-9-2 mark with a 1.69 goals against average, save percentage of .941 and three shutouts. He would easily be the best goaltender in fantasy if he got more offense to boost his win-loss record.
Breakouts of the Season: Mika Zibanejad (7-13–20, 4 PP points, +9 rating) and Jakob Silfverberg (10-9–19, 3 PP points, +9 rating) were both solid contributors in their rookie campaign and tied for fifth on the team in points. Each contributed as well on the power play and that bodes well for their future fantasy values.
Disappointment of the Season:The injuries. In addition to the ones mentioned above, Milan Michalek missed half the season with concussion issues and the list would go on and on and on.
Team Analysis: The team had the second-best goals against average and the best penalty kill in the league. With Ottawa it was all about defense but can the team find more offense? They finished 27th in goals per game at 2.3 so they left little margin for error on the back end of the rink.
2013-2014 Story Lines: Will this team stay healthy? They had it all put together but the injuries ravaged them. Yet they still made it to the second round of the playoffs.
How much better will the team be with everyone healthy? There was little O in Ottawa but there was a lot of black and blue. Let’s see how this team competes with full health before we determine if moves need to be made.
Who will replace Sergei Gonchar on the blue line and power play? He got traded to Dallas earlier this month and Karlsson can’t be out there the entire time on the power play.
