So if you told me yesterday afternoon that the Dolphins would only score 6 points against the Jets I wouldn’t be that shocked. But if you then said “and the Florida Panther’s will outscore them” I would recommend you have your head examined. You know who else should probably have their head examined? Steve Yzerman. You really looked at your Depth Chart back in August and said “Yeah, a Goalie tandem of Dwayne Roloson and Mathieu Garon is going to work out great.” You got lucky and struck lightning in a bottle with Roloson last year. Why push your luck again? Bottom line Roloson (and Garon) are unusable right now so BENCH BENCH BENCH! Now lets take a look at some players who actually did well last night:
Stephen Weiss – C (Fla): 2 Goals and 2 Assists goes a long way towards making your season stats look prettay good (3G/3A in 4 Games). He’s worth a flier while he’s getting points, but be prepared for multiple droughts throughout the season if you hang onto him.
Kris Versteeg – LW (Fla): Also notched 2 Goals & 2 Assists. I wrote about him last week and noted his huge role in the Florida Power Play. If you can absorb a hit on +/- he’s worth adding.
Dmitry Kulikov – D (Fla): Like I talk about all the time, somebody has to score in Florida. And Chris Cooleykov is 2nd on the team in Power Play minutes, was a 1st round pick in 2009 and is not even 21. Just don’t go crazy he’s not a must add.
Brian Campbell – D (Fla): If you play in a league with 4+ Defenseman Campbell is probably worthy of a spot on your roster. He’s still only 49% owned in Yahoo so he might be out there on Waiver Wire Island.
Alex Burmistrov – C (Wpg): Gotta give Winnepeg props for their 1st win there since Clinton was schtooping Monica Lewinsky. It was a good game for the 20 year old Burmistrov so keep an eye on him, don’t add though.
Evgeni Malkin – C (Pit): Yeahit’s time to worry. The surgery rumor is getting louder. Geno has officially fallen off my list of player’s I’d be happy to own…
Ondrej Pavelec – G (Wpg): Finally had a good game with just 1 Goal allowed and the W. I still think Ondrej the Giant can be a viable #3 Goalie so just hang in there with him.
Shawn Horcoff – C (Edm): Assisted on all 3 Oiler Goals and is seeing time with Hall and Ted Nugent on the Power Play. But it’s gonna take alot for me to recommend Horcoff, I’ve been burned by him in the past!
Nashville Predators – 12 Shots on Goal? 12!? And halfway through the 3rd when Edmonton took a 2-1 lead they only had 2 Shots in 10 minutes… God they are tough to watch.
Phil Kessel – RW (Tor): Scored another Goal and now leads the league with 6. He’s capable of 40, but don’t forget the Leaf’s were off to a fast start last year too and how’d that turn out?
David Jones – RW (Col): 4th Goal of the year and could be on his way to 30 this season (if he gets enough playing time). If you need a RW he’s worth a flier.
Teemu Selanne – RW (Ana): Finally gets on board with 2 Goals (1 on the Power Play). As long as he stays healthy I don’t see why he can’t get to 30 Goals again.
Saku Koivu – C (Ana): And in order for Selanne to get to 30 again he’s gonna need Koivu to play like he did tonight. These 2 can still create magic despite their “advanced age”.
Antti Niemi – G (SJ): Didn’t look good last night (and hasn’t looked good all year really). He gave up 2 weak Goals and I remember that being the knock on him back when he played on the Blackhawks. He’s still a good Goalie but he’s not close to “elite” status like some people were saying in the preseason.
Joe Thornton – C (SJ): Finally scores a point with a Power Play Assist. I reiterate I don’t like him this year and if you can find somebody to buy him at full value I’d trade him. He looks like an NFL lineman out there. JUMBO Joe is right. Maybe toss in a salad every once in a while?
Brent Burns – D (SJ): I would rather have Brent Burns than Dan Boyle. That is all…
John Tavares – C (NYI): Had to mention Mr. Upside and the 4 Points on Saturday (after 4 Points Thursday). This could be the beginning of a fantasy monster…
