No Offense, No Defense, No Chance. It’s the Story of the 2013 Colorado Avalanche.

Team Name: Colorado Avalanche

Record: 16-25-7, Fifth in Northwest, No Playoffs

Player of the Season: PA Parenteau put up 18 goals and 25 assists with 13 power-play points (6G,7A) and yet had a -11 rating last season.

Breakout of the Season: John Mitchell The fifth-season forward took a step forward and recaptured a little of the luster he had in his first season in the league (12-17–29 with Toronto in 08-09). This was the first season since then when he posted double-digit goals and assists (10-10–20) and was a +5 on a team where the negatives were heavy.

Disappointment of the Season: Goaltending. Seymon Varlamov was blah between the pipes to say the least. His 11-21-3 mark didn’t get the job done and it led to a 3.02 goals against average and a save percentage of only 90.3 percent. There were three shutouts but it doesn’t offset the fact that an average night was three or four goals against.

Add to that Jean-Sebastien Giguere was just mediocre (5-4-4 2.84 GAA, .908 svpct) and Colorado had problems in goal that derailed them all season.

Team Analysis: The Avalanche was the team that ended Chicago’s season-opening, 24-game undefeated streak but then took a nine-game slide that ended any hope of a postseason berth. The team was in the bottom third of the league in goals for (26th), goals against (27th), power-play conversion (24th) and penalty kill (20th). They’re a team with talent but they can’t put it all together and make a solid product on both ends of the ice.

2013-2014 Story Lines: How will the team respond to the new coach? What will they do with the #1 overall pick? How will Varlamov respond to having Roy as his coach? It has to be daunting to have one of the game’s all-time great goaltenders as your coach. It also means Roy might put his goaltenders on a short leash.

2013-2014 Fantasy Guys to Have: PA Parenteau, Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog, Paul Stasny

On the Fringe: Greg Zanon (only if your league highly  rewards blocked shots), Varlamov, Ryan O’Reilly
