Hey guys, Sven again with our stop in the Motor City for 31 in 31! Over the next month, I will be taking a look at each team’s players to watch out for going into the 2018-19 fantasy hockey season: The 31 in 31 daily segment. This analysis features everything from surefire studs, to sleepers, to prospects that may make an appearance at some point this season. Please let me know if you guys enjoy this type of material!  Reminder that the stat totals are from last season.
Gretzky, Lemieux, Forsberg, LaFontaine.  That's the list of players in the last 30 seasons to have multiple five assist games in one season.  Add Mathew Barzal to the list after Friday night.  Barzal became the first rookie in 100 years to have three five point games in one season dishing five assists in the 7-6 win over the Red Wings.  That puts Barzal over a point per game on the season and makes him the prohibitive favorite for the Calder (sorry Boeser).  Our second podcast ever, which took place before last season, saw Reid and I hype up Barzal for dynasties.  Regardless, he's blown away my expectations this season.  Now, it's not all rosy for fantasy.  The penalty minutes are low, but more importantly the shot rate is barely over two per game.  On the other hand, he's 20 years old and is over a point per game, so it's hard to complain.  There's a top 20 fantasy player in Barzal's future if he can get that shot rate up.  Regardless, he'll be a borderline top 50 player next year solely for the points, and it's only going to get better from there.  Let's take a look at what else happened over the weekend:
Jake DeBrusk was the second of three consecutive first round picks by the Bruins in the 2015 draft.  The other two players are still in the AHL developing but DeBrusk is starting to make his mark with the big squad.  In the 7-2 beatdown of the Blue Jackets, DeBrusk scored a goal and two assists with four shots and two penalty minutes.  He followed that up by scoring the only non-empty net goal against the Sabres on Tuesday.  As you can see below, snipe city: That brings DeBrusk up to 8 goals and 10 assists in 28 games with solid penalty minutes and a decent shot rate.  The crazy thing is that he's producing despite getting poor minutes (he's averaging 14 per game on the season).  DeBrusk has shown me plenty this season to improve his stock in dynasties.  He looks like a lock to be a top six player going forward while having plenty of upside from there.  In redrafts, I wouldn't hold him right now, solely because of the lack of minutes.  That said, DeBrusk is still a great streamer while he's producing.  Let's take a look at what else happened over the last two nights in the NHL:
Growing up, the Avalanche were always my second favorite team.  My grandpa was a huge Peter Forsberg fan and it didn't interfere with my Sabres since they were in the Western Conference.  I've always kept a close eye on them even though my rooting interests are now firmly with the Sabres and "Team Whoever I Bet In Game X."  Anyways, Gabriel Landeskog has been a personal favorite of mine in this new Avalanche era.  He became the youngest captain in the league when it wasn't cool to make your young top pick a captain.  Landeskog won the Calder and led the Avs on a massive warpath to a shocking #1 seed in 2013-14.  When I started at Razzball, things looked on the up for Landeskog at 23 years old.  Then, like the rest of the Avalanche organization, Landeskog struggled mightily.  Thankfully for all of us fantasy owners, he's back.  Landeskog had the best game of his career on Saturday scoring a hat trick and two assists with five shots against the Lightning.  Sure, the Avs lost, but it doesn't change his stat line for us!  The Kog now has 13+11 in 28 games with a strong plus-minus and solid PIM plus shots.  In fact, I'd be surprised if the penalty minutes don't jump soon.  It's amazing that Landeskog just turned 25 so he's not even in his prime yet.  Look for him to be a top 100 player for the rest of the season and for at least the next few years.  Let's take a look at what else happened over the weekend:
If you follow my writing at all, you know how much I love Brent Burns.  I mean, how can you not love this face? He's been among the most disappointing players in fantasy hockey to this point, mostly because he's found a way to have a horrible shooting percentage.  Well, since my last set of daily notes, Burns is finally back on track!  In his past three games, Burns has three goals and three assists with a whopping 22 shots on goal.   There's still plenty of time for Burns to deliver an elite fantasy season with a monster second half.  I certainly won't put it past the reigning Norris Trophy winner.  I'm going to change things up a bit with this post.  Since I'm a bit behind, mainly because of the site going down last Thursday night, I'm going to list every player, by NHL team, that I think is a hold or streamer in standard leagues, guys who become in play with hits, blocks and faceoffs added, and then add some information where necessary.  Let's get to it!
As far as stunning results go, the Senators going into Calgary and winning 6-0 against Calgary is up there.  They then matched it on Saturday night beating the Oilers 6-1.  Not bad for back to back games against two elite teams on the road without their best player.  Leading the way for the Senators was Kyle Turris.  Over the two games, Turris scored two goals on five shots with four assists and two PIM.  Reid's man crush has the ability to be a top 100 player in fantasy.  Will this be the year he gets there?  Maybe, but even if it's not, Turris should be owned in all leagues.  Let's take a look at what happened over the weekend:
We've reached the halfway point in my rankings and it's time to approach the finish line.  I will keep updating this with info for players as Friday progresses but I wanted to get the top 150 out as soon as possible.  Also, sorry for the delay, but the RCL's will launch this coming Monday in the afternoon.  I've had a few technical difficulties setting it up but that should be taken care of by then.  Without further adieu, here is my top 150:
The streak has finally ended.  After 26 consecutive seasons of making the playoffs, the Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs last season.  They are a team that seems to be stuck in no man's land.  They have an exciting young forward core in place (although some of them disappointed last season) but they also have a older set of players that are approaching the end.  Additionally, they have one of the worst bluelines in the league.  In a division full of teams on the rise, Detroit seems to be lagging a step behind.  Let's take a look at what Detroit is working with:
I've been driving the Anthony Mantha hype train for quite some time. Mantha, a two-time 50 goal scorer for Val-d'Or in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, led his team to the President's Cup totaling 24+14 in 24 playoff games. In 2013-14, Mantha scored 81 goals and 77 assists in 81 games. Does that have your attention? How about 127 penalty minutes as well? Sure, those are facts Viz, but why the hell should I care about what Mantha did three years ago in juniors? Why hasn't he established himself as an elite scorer in the NHL yet? Why is he a sleeper for fantasy hockey next season? Well, voice inside my head, I'm about to answer those questions for you.
This is going to be a two part series looking back at the recently-concluded NHL regular season. To start, I'm going to look at the biggest mistakes in my rankings. Who did I rank too high compared to consensus? Who did I rank too low? More importantly, what was my thought process and where did it go wrong? Hopefully this review will prevent similar mistakes in the future. Let's get right to it!
Jake Guentzel was on an absolute tear before he suffered a concussion after a hit from Rasmus Ristolainen. He was owned by most of Razzball Nation as we got on top of it before Guentzel broke out. Thankfully, Guentzel recovered quickly and returned on Friday night. He scored a goal on three shots in his return and then repeated that performance on Sunday. The Penguins have a decent schedule this week with four games, including a back to back on Saturday and Sunday to close the regular season. You can wait a day since the Pens don't play tonight but I'd look to grab Guentzel again if you cut him when he went down. The minutes and role are right back to where they were pre-concussion so I'm looking for Guentzel to finish the season strong before he contributes to a potential playoff run for Pittsburgh. Here's what else happened on the penultimate weekend of the season:
When it comes to the fantasy playoffs, you're looking for two things. One, you want to get as many starts from your players as possible. Getting one or two extra starts from your bottom end guys / streamers goes a long way. The other thing you want is your superstars to carry you. Because I was in California for the last four days, my time for writing was non-existent. The good news is two fold. One, I got to meet Grey! He is the man, plain and simple. Secondly, I'm here to catch up on everything that's happened since last Thursday and it starts with Sidney Crosby. On Friday, Crosby scored two goals and an assist with four shots to push the Penguins past the Devils. He followed that up on Sunday with a hat trick on six shots against the Panthers. Both are huge wins for the Penguins given their current injury situation and it was massive for people in the fantasy playoffs. Here's to hoping you have Crosby because you're ahead of the field right off the bat. He's the number 1 skater at the moment and as of now, I'd rank him first overall going into next season. That can be debated at a later time but there's no denying that Crosby is having one of the best seasons of his illustrious career. Here's what else happened over the last four days:
