Steve Yzerman can’t ask for a better start from his big offseason swing.  After his first game without a point as a Red Wing, Alex DeBrincat followed it up with a hat trick and an assist with five shots in Sunday’s win over the Flames.  That brings DeBrincat to a whopping eight goals and four assists in his first six games with Detroit.  He’s clicked with Dylan Larkin (two goals and three assists over two games) to give Detroit an elite first line.  We’ve seen DeBrincat score 41 goals twice before playing with Kane, so it’s not like this is completely out of nowhere.  While this shooting percentage won’t last, given how much Detroit is rolling the first line, I’m expecting career highs across the board for DeBrincat.  There’s a real chance Detroit plays its way into the playoff picture this season if the first line can win its matchups on a regular basis.  Let’s take a look at what else happened over the weekend:

Vancouver has managed to blow multi-goal leads in each of their first four games.  Pretty remarkable stuff that already has Boudreau on the hot seat.  The good news is that there’s still been some offensive bright spots for the Canucks, and Elias Pettersson is leading the way.  Pettersson had five points over the last two nights, totaling two goals, three assists, and six shots in the two games.  That brings Pettersson to 3+3 in four games, along with 3.5 shots per game.  That’s a good start to one of my bold predictions of the season, which is that Pettersson will score 45+ goals this year.  Time will tell if that pans out, but I have no doubt that Pettersson can be a top 25 player despite the low penalty minutes.  Let’s take a look at what else happened over the last two nights:

Kevin Fiala’s first two games for the Kings left a lot to be desired.  He didn’t generate much in terms of chances, he took a stupid penalty in their opener against Vegas, and his ice time suffered as a result.  His old team, the Wild, were coming off giving up seven goals against the Rangers and were big favorites to get their first win of the season.  Instead, the Wild gave up seven goals again, with the Los Angeles top line leading the way.  Fiala scored a goal and two assists with six shots in the 7-6 win, while Anze Kopitar dished three assists and Adrian Kempe scored two goals and an assist with three shots and four PIM.  My biggest takeaway from this trio in the early going is that I was too low on Kempe this season.  While he’s not the focal point of the power play anymore, he’s still vital to its success, and the addition of Fiala strengthened the top line.  All of them are easy holds at the moment and I don’t expect that to change.  Let’s take a look at what else happened on Friday and Saturday:

Today, I’m going to complete my goaltending rankings with tiers 5-8.  If you draft one of these guys as your #2 goalie, you’re carrying a bit of risk that they could implode.  There are guys in tiers 5-7 that have upside, whether it’s needing an injury to the other goalie on the team, or being the #1 on a team with a lot of variance.  Let’s get to it!

I hope all you loyal Razzballers are doing well!  We’re just over a month away from the NHL season starting, and with football starting tonight (Go Bills!), it’s time for people to transition to fantasy hockey drafts.  I’m going to start my rankings next week, but for today, I’m going to look at every team’s offseason.  Some teams made massive changes and will have a longer write up e.g. Calgary, and others who did minimal will have a short blurb e.g. the Islanders.  Let’s get to it!

It’s that time again. Friday/Sunday stream targets to finish out the week. Get those claims in today so you don’t miss out! Unless you’re in one of them fancy same-day adds leagues.

Note: For the sake of uniformity and convenience on my part, only players rostered in less than 50% of Yahoo leagues will be included. Also, a “***” denotes a priority stream, in my humble opinion.

Remember a month ago when it was a foregone conclusion J.T. Miller was going to get traded?  It sure seems like he played the Canucks into close enough contention that it’s no longer a consideration.  Miller had a goal and three assists with two PIM in the 5-3 win over the Canadiens on Wednesday.  That’s 21 points […]

Those of you that have been patient holding Evander Kane for almost four months were rewarded on Saturday night.  Kane played his first game of the season with the Oilers and went right on McDavid’s wing.  Kane scored in the first period and finished with three shots in the 7-2 win over the Canadiens.  He’s still available in 50% of ESPN leagues and very close to that on other sites.  Kane is a must own immediately, and if you use FAAB, you should bid a large amount of your budget.  Yes, he could do something stupid and be banished, but the upside is too high for him to be on waivers.  Let’s take a look at what else happened over the weekend:

In Ilya Sorokin’s first two starts, he allowed ten goals.  In the next seven, he’s allowed eight total.  Sorokin kept up his hot streak with a 24 save shutout against the Jets on Saturday.  Semyon Varlamov is back for the Islanders, but for now, Sorokin is getting all of the volume.  I had him pegged as a great platoon guy this year who ideally was your #3, but would be fine as a #2.  Now, it would be terrific if Sorokin is your #2 because he could easily end up being a top 10 goalie even without much volume.  The GAA and save percentage look to be elite while the wins on a per-game basis should be as well.  Long term, Sorokin looks like a top five goalie.  Let’s take a look at what else happened over the weekend:

Today brings a nice 10 game slate with a lot of lopsided matchups and two marquee games.  Let’s get right into what we learned from the last two nights around the league and what to look forward to tonight:

THREE THINGS WE LEARNED ON 3/27 AND 3/28

1) Connor McDavid is the best player in hockey.  Okay, this isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it’s worth bringing up that McDavid now has back to back 100+ point seasons at 21 years old, along with his first 40 goal season.  It’s sickening how good he is.  Almost as sickening as his GM:

Now is the time of the year where we see college players decide to forgo their collegiate career and sign an entry level contract.  There have been a bunch of players in recent years who have made an immediate impact, such as Chris Kreider and Brock Boeser.  We could have another name to add to the list.  Ryan Donato signed an ELC with Boston and had quite the NHL debut, scoring a goal and two assists with six shots playing almost 20 minutes..  With all of the graduates the Bruins have had over the last year, Donato is currently their #1 prospect (at least in my eyes).  He was a great goal scorer at Harvard and did very well in the Olympics scoring five goals in five games.  His shot is his best attribute but he’s also a strong skater.  I don’t see superstar upside, but Donato can definitely become a top 6’er.  He’s a streamer for now depending on who he’s with and how many minutes he’s getting, but he’s certainly a solid dynasty target.  Donato played on the first power play unit and the second line on Monday, so here’s to hoping that’s what we get for the rest of the season, at least until Patrice Bergeron returns.  Let’s take a look at what else happened over the last two nights:
