It’s opening night!  After looking at some recent injuries, signings, and demotions, Reid and I finish our season preview by looking at the Western Conference over/unders and prop bets.  Lines also came out for the Art Ross, Rocket Richard, Norris and Vezina Trophies so we look at all of the available options and pick some bets where we see fit.  We close by previewing opening night along with a couple games from Thursday and Friday night.  All of that and more in the latest edition of the Razzball Hockey Podcast!

If Mathieu Perreault is available, use him.  He’s owned more than 20% so here are the three guys I like most under my normal standards:

Sean Couturier (17.8%) – All signs point to Couturier centering the first line tonight.  I don’t love him as an offensive player but he’s worth using in this role.

Sam Bennett (14.0%) – I still believe in Bennett and he should get power play time on the second unit.  The game with Edmonton is potentially high scoring so I’ll take my chances.

I wanted to do Kailer Yamamoto as my third but he’s not even in the ESPN player pool which is hilariously bad.  If he’s available, use him ahead of the next guy.

Zach Hyman (5.2%) –  He gets to play with Matthews and Nylander in the opener which puts Hyman firmly in play.

How in on Vrana should we be? Wait and see or grab him quick?

@ashtray: I’m not sure it lasts but U would grab him now while he’s with Ovechkin to see how it goes.

I need another goalie, some of my options are Varlamov, Hellebuyck, Mrazek as potential starters or would you go with Grubauer, Saros, Del, Huttonl or Reimer?

@Tony: Oh boy. I feel like most of those guys might do more harm than good depending on your categories. If I had to pick one of the three, it would be Hellboy, but Mason is getting the start tonight. Reimer could play as much as Hellebuyck and Mrazek, he probably belongs in that group. If you’re desperate for starts, then grab Hellebuyck but just be wary of it. If you’re able, you’re probably better off streaming.

@Viz: Standard Y! categories. I have M Jones and Bishop already but I have been burnt by injuries nearly every year so I just want to have something in my back pocket just in case.

@Tony: Gotcha, makes sense. I would lean Hellebuyck then because he has the highest upside.

    Viz,
10-tm H2H cat Keeper (keep10), stats (G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP, SHP, GWG, SOG), (W, GAA, SV, SHO)

Just had my draft last night and got screwed on Goaltending. At some point there was a big run and I missed the boat so decided to Punt Goaltending until the end. I’ll try and trade for some tending but, considering what’s left on the wire, do you see any swaps ? (I picked Pom with my final pick thinking he’d be with Eichel but there were a bunch of other names I was looking at: S. Theadore, B. Booeser, etc.). Also, can you review my team? what would you look to add in trades ?

@John: Gotcha. Then I’d hold off on the Coyle move and would still lean towards grabbing Reimer.

@John: Team looks really good, you should dominate the offensive categories most weeks. Yes, the goaltending is poor, but I don’t mind it, especially in H2H where you can get lucky week to week. Pominville is slated to start with Eichel so I like the gamble and would hold to see what it looks like opening night. I would be fine dropping him (or Miller) to grab Coyle but again, not a must.

If you want to try and trade for a goalie, that’s obviously fine because you have incredible depth, but I wouldn’t make a massive overpayment either. I would lean towards dropping Mrazek for Reimer since Florida should be a better team and Reimer should have close to an even split with Luongo. Overall, this looks like a team that should win 6+ of the offensive categories most weeks and through the nature of head to head goalies, you’ll do enough there to be a real contender.

@Steven Boyle: You have a great team, well done. You may be a little short in faceoffs depending on how many draws Pavelski takes, plus your extras seem to be mostly wingers, but you should crush everything else so I wouldn’t sweat it at all. Nicely done!

      • Steven Boyle says:
        (link)

@Viz: Yeah gonna try to stream faceoffs, tried to take Carter and O’Reilly ahead of some defensemen and goalies to help out with that cat.

Well it appears Hornqvist starts the season on the IR so The Lost Vikings didn’t have to make a hard decision between Bjorkstrand and Bjork. All hail the Bjokers!

something’s up with jaywrong’s posts, it makes typing ridiculously slow and when his pages are open it slows down entire computer. i’m over here just testing to make sure it’s only his pages. this appears fine, normal typing speed.
