The Ducks had six players score at least 10 goals on the season and two goaltenders with at least 15 wins each. They won the Pacific Division, yet couldn’t get out of the first round of the playoffs. It left fans saying “What the Duck?”

Team Name: Anaheim Ducks

Record: 30-12-6, 1st in Pacific, Lost 4-3 to Detroit in Western Conference Quarterfinals

Player of the Season: Ryan Getzlaf led the team with 15 goals, 34 assists and 49 points. He topped the team with 15 points on the power play (4G, 11A) as well and was the engine on which the team drove all season.

Breakout of the Season: Nick Bonino had modest numbers of 5-8–13 with a -3 rating and a career-high three power-play points. It doesn’t look like much on paper but he had only five more points in 23 more games last season. Bonino has the potential to pick up a nice pile of points in a full campaign.

Disappointment of the Season: Daniel Winnik had five goals in his first four games of the season including a pair of two-goal games to open the season. And then he wound up scoring just once more for the rest of the season. Ugh.

Team Analysis: The Ducks did everything right in 2013 but they couldn’t get the job done against Jimmy Howard and Detroit in the first round. They had a top-10 offense (8th), defense (9th) and power play (4th). They even a middle of the road penalty kill (13th) and yet they failed in the playoffs. Goaltenders Viktor Fasth and Jonas Hiller both posted solid seasons but it’s hard to tell which one will take the lead in 2o13-14.

2013-2014 Story Lines: Will Teemu Selanne come back for another season at age 43? Will Fasth or Hiller be the starting goaltender for this team?

2013-2014 Fantasy Guys to Have: Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Bobby Ryan, Francois Beauchemin, Andrew Cogliano,

Guys On the Fringe: Selanne, Bonino, Fasth, Hiller (since no starter has been defined yet), Sheldon Souray
